ADELINE
"Up or down?" Nora asks beside me.
The question pulls my attention away from my own reflection and over to hers in the mirror. I pause with a mascara wand centimeters away from my lashes to think for a moment.
She stands with one hand bent, holding almost all of her hair back except for a few stray strands that frame her face. When she lets it fall from her grasp, I answer immediately. "Down."
Her long blonde hair falls over her shoulders effortlessly and beautifully in silky loose waves. She's like the epitome of an angel if I ever saw one. The soft material of her dress that identically matches her icy blue eyes only aids my case.
"Are you leaving yours down too?" She questions as she starts perfecting her hair.
"Yeah, I was thinking about straightening it." My eyes flitter back to my own reflection and I finally finish applying the mascara over my lashes.
"That'll look good."
The conversation between Nora and I continues to naturally flow as we spend about thirty more minutes getting ready. In the end, I'm grateful for her presence on this trip. Admittedly, Braxton was right. It's good to have someone in his pack that I can call a friend.
Just as I'm double checking my appearance in the large mirror that's hung on one of the walls in Nora's room, a knock sounds at the door.
"It's Braxton and Kai." Nora pipes from where she still stands in front of the vanity in the bathroom. "They're so impatient."
I can practically hear her eye roll, making me chuckle softly under my breath as I make my way over to the door and swing it open. I'm met with hazel eyes that darken instantly as they trail down my body. They linger on my chest and the slit that exposes most of my upper thigh but they eventually reach the black heels that cover my feet before snapping back up to meet my gaze.
I pay no attention to Kai, who stands next to Braxton in the hallway. They're both in fitted black suits and ties, but it's not the sight of Braxton in a suit that makes my heart race with satisfaction. It's his stare.
The intensity of his eyes on me—practically burning a hole through my head, tells me everything I need to know. He's not pleased with my dress choice. And I'm willing to bet it's because it lacks modesty in any sense.
He says nothing though. Neither do I.
Kai is the one who breaks the silence, his tone laced with boredom. "Is my sister ready?" His shoe tapping against the floor in an annoying pace pulls my eyes from where they'd been locked onto Braxton's.
"Yes." Nora answers the question from behind me before I have the chance to. Her heels click against the floor as she walks towards us and I step out the room, giving her space to exit.
Braxton on the other hand doesn't give me the same courtesy. He doesn't move an inch and I'm practically pressed right against him. One of his hands reaches out to steady me, the heat of it searing through the red fabric of my dress and burning into my hip. When I look back up at him, his eyes are still set on me, never have faltered an inch either.
Nora shuts the door and she follows Kai as he starts to make his way towards the stairs at the end of the hallway. Just as I'm about to follow too, Braxton's voice stops me.
"I don't like this." His hand tightens around the fabric that's practically glued to my body, showing me what he means by this.
I pout my bottom lip. "That sounds like a you problem."
