CADENCE DANIELS was numb. That was the best word to describe how she felt right now, or rather how little she felt.

As soon as she had left Steve in that storage room after concocting a solid plan for him to confront Fury about the weapons blueprints, everything had gone to shit. Complete and utter shit. No shit could simply be shittier than this shit.

Cadence had returned to the control room after had talked to Steve, but it wasn't long until everything had gone wrong. First, it was sensing Loki and his scepter-ed crew near the helicarrier, then it was Loki and his scepter-ed crew attacking the engines of the helicarrier.

Suddenly, the commands from Fury and Agent Hill were to get every agent that could fight to defend the helicarrier and the scepter, with only the tech crew staying in control to make sure when the engines were fixed, they were up and running smoothly.

This meant that Cadence was hurried to the armory to grab a few weapons and some protective gear before heading off in her group to secure the rooms and areas of the ship.

As much as she wanted to run to Steve and protect him, make sure he was okay, she reminded herself to stay put and even put an armband over her counter so it wouldn't distract her. An older agent had even sent her a pitiful smile, telling her that he knew the look of a scared agent on their first mission after finding their soulmate.

She was only able to send a small, struggled smile back and didn't bother explaining that her soulmate was on the helicarrier as well. Oh, and also the one and only Captain America.

Then there wasn't much time to think of Steve. The invaded personel looked identical to the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and it was hard to tell them apart, but Cadence had gotten good at noticing the slightly blue sclera in their eyes. Gunning them down and securing their either dead or unconscious bodies left little room in her alert and nimble mind to think of her soulmate.

Until her group had been called back after clearing their section, and one agent had the audacity to mention that he heard Captain America was hanging off the back engine.

That nearly sent her to an early grave.

Cadence, of course, had studied the tapes of Steve before. His less than by-the-book fighting style and his continuous ability to disobey direct orders back in the day. But it was much different when it was now. When it was suddenly her soulmate doing those things. When she could help him, save him, be there for him.

Which led to now. The only thing she can feel is numb right now, Cadence thinks. That is possibly the only emotion in the world that could course through her bones. Her cheeks are stained with streaks of tears which had run down them like slalom skiers.
