CADENCE DANIELS scowled as she heard the familiar sound of Merritt's voice that she couldn't believe once found her solace in it. Now his voice just sounded like a pig mixed with an annoying parrot, like Iago from Aladdin.

"What do you want?" Cadence asked, not even trying to hide the irritated tone from her voice and words.

Merritt smirked and pushed off the outside wall of the meeting room they were both just in, "Just wanted to say hey, it's been a while. What's been going on?"

Cadence rubbed her temples, mega-annoyed, "Don't even pretend that you care. What do you want Merritt?" She asked while starting to walk away.

Merritt shrugged and started walking by Cadence's side, "Nothing. Just wondering why you agreed to join this team."

"Because I didn't know you were on it." Cadence snarked back, "Still with Henna? Or are you working to get someone else fired?"

Merritt laughed and a bitter frown formed on Cadence's lips, "Nah, she didn't like me too much after she got fired."

Now it was Cadence's turn to laugh, but it was more of a laugh that you would give to an entitled soccer mom. "Wonder why." Cadence replied.

Even when they were dating, Cadence and Merritt's relationship was a little strained. Cadence always grew up wanting her soulmate even though she knew something was unique about her counter. That always got in the way of any of her relationships. Dating wasn't really a big thing. It was more for glitches and people who had lost their soulmate. Although, there were those cute stories of soulmates meeting their other half because they recognized the distance listed for the profile and calculated the range of steps, comparing it to the counter on their wrist.

It was a lot of work, but if you were to ask any couple who met that way, they would say it was all worth it.

Merritt and Cadence met through S.H.I.E.L.D. in initial training. From the very first date, Merritt made it very clear that he had no intention of ever finding his soulmate and in fact, he didn't want to. Cadence never saw why he didn't want to find his soulmate. His soulmate would complete him, be his other half, and fulfill him. Merritt just didn't care about that.

Now, Cadence had always told Merritt that if she were to ever find her soulmate, their relationship would cease to exist and Merritt would have to move on. Cadence was loyal and honest, but she needed to be loyal and honest to herself and that meant being with her soulmate if she ever got the chance. The first half of their relationship was great. Merritt was very caring and even though he had his flaws and quirks that didn't sit right with Cadence some of the time, he was a good boyfriend.
