THE FIRST THING Steve Rogers noticed when he first opened his eyes was the stiffness in his bones. This used to be a normal thing before he was pumped full of that serum that Dr. Erskine created. When he was "little", his bones almost always ached after any type of physical activity so the feeling wasn't foreign. Only forgotten.

The second thing he noticed was the room he was in with the game playing on a radio (he presumed) in the background. The room was a perfect model of what a New York apartment is, except everything seemed brand new. And no apartment in New York during the 40s was new. The bed was perfect, the floor had no scratch marks on the wood, the window sill had no grime on it. It all seemed too clean.

And the third and final thing Steve noticed was when walked over to the mirror in the room after getting up off the bed. A changing number caught his eye, right on his arm. It had never been there before, he was sure of that much. But Steve recognized this, he had longed for it all his life.

It was a soulmate counter.

His own soulmate counter.

Tearing his gaze away from the mirror, Steve switched over to the black ink on his arm that was now constantly changing, something Steve had never had the delight to see on his own arm before. It meant that he had a soulmate, that they were alive and out there moving somewhere.

Before the serum, Steve was always bullied and picked on for not having a soulmate counter (as well as a few other physical attributes) but after the serum, the running joke was always that Steve's soulmate (more like Captain America's) was the good ol' U.S. of A. It got tiring after a while and he found solace in Peggy Carter, a woman with a rare glitched soulmate counter on her delicate wrist. They got along well enough and they enjoyed the comfort and company of one another when everyone else was off finding their soulmates. Who said that you couldn't find love in another?

But now not only did he have a soulmate counter, but it was also a low number. Not in the millions, hundred thousands, or even thousands. It was in the hundreds, which meant she was nearby. And pacing, Steve guessed as the number fluctuated and then returned to around a consistent number. Then another thought took over his brain...

Peggy. What happened? What happened to her, more like. He remembered going down in a plane after fighting with the Red Skull and saying goodbye to Peggy. And now Steve supposed he just woke up from a coma? But after how long? A month? Or two? Maybe even an entire year? Or maybe it's just been a week, although it didn't seem like it from the clean apartment he was surrounded in.

And because the game playing on the radio was not doing a very good job of convincing him that it had only been a week or so.

And who rescued him when the plane went down? Was it Howard and Peggy or did the remains of H.Y.D.R.A. get him? Steve found this question would soon be answered as he heard footsteps on the other side of the door of this "apartment".
