I stood there for some times. My hand reached my neck, I still felt the touch of his lips on it. He HAD to stop this kind of things...seriously ? He totally knew what he was doing...I knew too.
I decided that I should follow the same portal he used earlier, my head started to ache, I touched the bandage on my hand, at least, the rest of it since I did not need a big one anymore. I wasn't bleeding. I sighed in relief and made my way to the portal. The atmosphere around the HQ was a bit strange. I looked around and saw no one, the place was dead.
« Y/N . »
I jumped from where I was, certainly not expecting Kafka to pop behind me. Her presence was overwhelming, considering the atmosphere around.« Ah...Kafka ? Do y—»
Before I knew it, I was sitting in her personal office.
The atmosphere in Kafka's office was tense, and I could sense that something was amiss. Kafka, my superior, fixed her gaze on me with an intensity that made me uneasy. Her words hit me like a gust of cold wind.« Y/N, we need to talk about the intrusion that occurred in the HQ yesterday. » She said coldly. I surely worried for nothing. She needed to talk to everyone. But yet...
The intrusion? Why would she want to talk about it ? My mind raced as I struggled to comprehend what Kafka was saying.
« Ah, so what happened ? » I asked, my voice betraying a mix of confusion and concern.
Kafka leaned back in her chair, her expression stern. She placed her elbows on her desk and looked straight at me.
« Our security systems were breached. Someone accessed sensitive information. Do you have any idea what that means for Elio? »
I shook my head, genuinely puzzled. I felt like her question wasn't so general, it was meant for me.
« I do, of course. Can I be of any help, then ? »
She sighed, producing a file from her desk. It was a brownish file, with a note and a danger sign on it. Woah.
« Owl claims he has proof that you were behind it. » My heart stopped for a moment when her words dropped. What ??
Owl? My ex, the one whose sanity had gone poof after we broke up ? The same freaking one who tried to kill me so many times, and get me back ? The one...panic set in at that moment.
« Kafka, you can't trust him. He's not well. You should get him examined... » My voice trembled. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Was the whole thing going to fall on me ? Because of that bastard ?
But Kafka's gaze remained impassive. She checked some paper from the file.
« I need to see the proof before jumping to conclusions. Owl says you betrayed us. From the statements...he's been watching you for a while, you've been suspect. »
My eyes widened in disbelief. I felt my hands getting sweaty. No way this could be happening.
« Betrayed? I would never do that, Kafka. You know how—dedicated I am to this organization. This is my dream career, becoming a Stellaron Hunter—like you ! »
Kafka held up the file, her eyes scrutinizing me.
« Owl's proof seems convincing. He provided details that only someone with insider knowledge could have.Yet, Silverwolf showed you some private access recently. »
« Kafka, I was fighting alongside everyone else when the intrusion happened. I didn't have time to compromise our security. I got hurt. »
Leaning forward, Kafka's tone turned accusatory.
« How do I know you didn't orchestrate it to divert suspicion? Maybe you're trying to throw us off your trail. I know you are a smart girl. » Her tone was monotonous, I've never seen her like that.
Frustration boiled within me. How could she throw me away like that ? I thought I could be wrong on her but right now...
« I'm not trying to throw anyone off, Kafka. I'm telling you the truth. Ask Silver Wolf. She was there with me the entire time. She saved my life. » My only proof was her.
Kafka attempted to contact Silver Wolf, but she didn't answer. My desperation grew.
« Kafka, please. I swear on everything I hold dear, I'm innocent. Owl is crazy, and this is his way of getting back at me for leaving him." I didn't know what to say, I panicked.
She sighed, conflicted. Could I still have a chance to be believed ?
« Y/N, you've been living in my house. If you're truly innocent, why did Owl have evidence against you? What did you do ? »
I searched for the right words.
« I... I don't know what Owl is claiming, but it's not true. Maybe he manipulated something or created a false narrative. I left him because he became obsessed with me...and it was tearing me apart. » My vision slightly got blurry, I couldn't lose my job, no way.
Kafka's gaze softened momentarily, but suspicion lingered.
« I've known you for some weeks now, Y/N, but Owl's proof seems undeniable. I can't ignore it. I have to protect Elio. »
My heart sank. This wasn't true, I was having a bad dream.
« Kafka, please. I would never betray Elio. I love this organization. I've risked my life for it. If you kick me out, where will I go ? » My voice got more and more shaky.
Her expression hardened.
« If you're innocent, you'll find a way to clear your name. But as long as there's doubt, you're a threat. » She frowned.
Tears welled in my eyes as I pleaded. Things got worse so fast...
« I have nothing to hide. I'm not a traitor. Please don't do this. He's mad...I could prove all of it. »
Kafka stood up, her decision final.
« Pack your things from my house, Y/N. You can't stay here. If you truly didn't betray us, you'll find a way to prove it. But until then, you're a risk I can't afford. » She simply left her office, leaving me in the empty room.
As I gathered my belongings when I got back to her house, the weight of this decision settled heavily in my chest. Being almost cast out from the organization I had dedicated my life to, under the shadow of false accusations, was unthinkable. At least, I wasn't fired for now. I had to find Owl and confront him...why was I scared now ? He wanted that, to show me of how he was so superior to me...scary.
I was now outside, in the bright and lively streets. I saw a group of friends passing by, if only I could laugh around like that sometimes...the night was still young. Where should I go now ? I was holding my bag, checking my phone. Should I—He would never answer.
Ring Ring...
I totally did it. I was already sighing, Blade would never answer a phone call. He hated using a phone anyways. Suddenly, I heard the ringing stop and a hoarse voice. My heart skipped a beat.« What do you want ? »
