The next day, I wake up to my alarm and get ready for the day. I make my way downstairs for breakfast and see mom cooking and Rodrik eating breakfast. Wait what Rodrik?! "Morning mom" I say taking a seat, "Morning...Rodrik." "Morning" Rodrik says ruffling my hair and stealing a piece of bacon from my plate. "Hey" I say trying to steal the piece back, "Give it back, you have your own food." "Rod" mom says, "Be nice." I stick my tongue out at Rodrik and begin to eat my breakfast. Rodrik ruffles my hair again and goes back to his breakfast.
"Finish eating, get dressed, and grab your things" Rodrik says finishing his breakfast, "I'm taking you and Kaitlyn to school, speaking of shouldn't she be here already?" "Um..." I say trying to think of an excuse, "She wasn't feeling good so her mom decided to keep her home instead of sending her to school." "Ok" Rodrik says, "I'm gonna finish getting ready. Hurry up and meet me at my car." Rodrik puts dishes in the sink and walks to his room.
"I have to run some errands. Have a good day" mom says grabbing her purse and kissing my forehead, "Don't stress out about the Kaitlyn situation, everything will work out the way it's supposed to. I love you Ryker." I finish my breakfast and place my dishes in the sink. I quickly get dressed then grab my backpack and practice bag. I head over to Rodrik's car to see him already sitting in the driver seat. "You ready" Rodrik asks. "Yep" I reply climbing into the front seat. Rodrik picks up his girlfriend Bianca, kicking me into the backseat and then drives me to school.
He pulls up to the front and parks. "By Bianca, bye Rodrik" I say grabbing my things. "Bye Rika" Bianca says turning around and looking at me, "It was nice seeing you again." "Bye, have fun" Rodrik says. I exit the car and walk to my locker. Out of the corner of my eye I see Kaitlyn. Even though I really want to go over there and talk to her, I don't because I told her I would give her space while she processed everything, so instead I smile and wave. Kaitlyn gives me a small smile before walking over to a group of two girls and three guys. They greet each other and walk off.
I sigh and lean my forehead against my locker. This sucks. Kaitlyn is my only friend. I'm all alone now. I put my practice bag in my locker before heading to my first class. Every class that me and Kaitlyn have together, she doesn't sit next me like normal but usually in another seat that's on the other side of the room, at lunch she sits with her new friends leaving me all alone, and she walks home with her new friends leaving me to walk by myself. Today sucked to say the least, hopefully tomorrow won't be as bad and Kaitlyn figures things out quickly so that things can go back to normal or improve.
It did not get better the next day, in fact it was the same as before. My mom drove me to school, Kaitlyn ignored me all day in favor of hanging out with her new friends, and Rodrik gave me a ride home after practice. The next day was the same as before as was the day after that and the day after that. This cycle went on for a few weeks before it was broken by something unexpected happening.
Just like the last several weeks since I told Kaitlyn, my mom drops me off at school. "Have a good day Ryker" mom says, "Be safe." "Bye mom" I say climbing out of the car. I head to my locker alone like I have since Kaitlyn has been hanging out with her new friends and I haven't made any new friends. When I reach my locker and stop in my tracks shocked by what I am seeing. Written on my locker is the word tranny. I gulp before looking left and right. For the most part kids continue on their way unaware of what's written on my locker. There are a few however that have stopped and noticed.
These individuals are either whispering to their friends, pointing and laughing, or taking a picture. At this moment Kaitlyn and her friends walk up to me. "What a freak" one of the boys says. One of the girls pulls out her phone and points it at me, "It's the wanna be boy, the weirdo that thinks she's a boy. News flash, you'll never be anything but a freak." I look down at the ground biting my lip before looking up at Kaitlyn, hoping she will defend me. Her new friends look at her as well, waiting to hear what she will say.
Kaitlyn looks at me, looking like she is troubled by what her new friends are saying before looking conflicted. She looks down at the ground for a few seconds before looking back at me with determination behind her eyes. "I can't believe I was ever friends with a tranny freak" Kaitlyn says. Her words hit me hard and cut me deep. I bite my lip so as to not cry in front of them. Her new friends laugh before walking away.
I meet Kaitlyn's gaze and she looks regretful. She mouths 'I'm sorry' before walking after her friends. I shake my head and quickly walk to the football field and hide under the bleachers as I begin to cry. Well I guess I know where Kaitlyn stands. And I know that things will never go back to normal or be the same again between us.
