The whole drive over in fact, the smile lingering falling on and off as Fallon surfed through different thoughts. She pulled up to a a large house, making her question if she was at the right place.
What the hell would one woman want with such a big place? The house was elegant, unusually painted black with an all white garage and stone path leading to the door.
Fallon parked her car on the street, shutting the door and locking it before hesistantly walking on the driveway.
She hadn't even reached the door yet when Cleo swung it open. The older woman had an unreadable expression on her face, unexplainably striking a bit of excitement in Fallon.
When the younger woman reached the door, Cleo stared at her for a moment before opening the door wider, allowing her to step in.
The interior was even prettier than the outside was. Tan wooden floors with all grey furniture, lots of plants and a very nice smell all greeting Fallon, more than the actual person was.
"Your home is beautiful Cleo." Fallon smiled, looking up at her older coworker who simply stared down at her.
"I should fire you." She finally spoke, her tone failing to sound as tough as she'd intended. Fallons polite smile fell off her face as she realized that her sentence held a bit of weight.
At the moment, all Fallon wanted to say was 'please don't.'
"You wouldn't do that." The younger woman smiled causing Cleo to want to wipe that smirk off her face, but she didn't.
She simply stared, before sighing and motioning for Fallon to follow her deeper into the home. They turned a corner and walked into Cleo's living room which was huge.
A big tv sat in the center of the room with her grey family sized couch surrounding it. A glass table sat empty in between the two.
The tv was turned off, leaving the whole home silent which was slightly uncomfortable for Fallon.
"Sit." Cleo said, Fallon mindlessly obeying as she sat on the couch, watching the older woman leave the room momentarily before returning with a bottle of water.
She set it down in front of Fallon and sat down on the opposite side of the couch.
"Madeline is my sister.. but honest to God I have no idea what happened to Jason." Cleo finally spoke, her demeanor softening ever so slightly.
"I hid it because.. I wanted to be able to be involved in her case and get the details that I usually wouldn't be able to get if I wasn't involved." The older woman avoided eye contact with Fallon.
That earlier pang of sympathy returned to Fallons chest.
"That's it." Cleo cleared her throat and finally made eye contact with Fallon. The younger woman held her gaze for a moment, pondering.
The silence had gone on longer than Fallon realized because Cleo cleared her throat once more.
"Well, say something. You forced yourself over here like a pest and I told you what you wanted to know." Cleo spat, annoyed.
"Sorry, I-" Fallon sputtered. The younger woman felt bad that she'd made such a big deal over all of this. Losing her sister and not knowing who did it must be so painful, but having to be so involved must've been even worse.
