"Could it have been prevented?" asked Pak Kia as she straightened the buttons on her sleeve.
Kim Minji and Kim Jisoo stood in front of her, both plagued by a guilty conscience. The incident in the dining area was irreversible and they had been the ones in charge.
They were therefore responsible for what had happened.
Choi Yeonjun's back had already been covered in wounds and bruises before, and now his spine was also hurting. The doctor had told him to rest a lot, and not just because of the sprained ankle. His move into the residence proved to be bumpy and those present knew that the pain could prevent him from settling in well here. Therefore, they felt guilty that they could not foresee or even prevent Haechan's outbursts. But Pak Kia knew how unpredictable her longest protégé could be at times, so she sounded calm and understanding.
They were in the leader's office, and the bright room always had a pleasantly warm atmosphere. There were fresh, fragrant roses in the vase on the desk and, as usual, the radio was playing soft sounds. It was an idyllic afternoon when the manager returned to the residence.
Pak Kia liked to spend time here because it was her retreat.
"Well..." Kim Minji began, looking down at her clasped hands as she tried not to let on that she felt uncomfortable despite the leader's calm tone. She had seen Yeonjun's eyes as he lay on the floor. He had almost lost consciousness, and that scene still lingered in her mind - cruel. "We should have noticed, but we were engrossed in a conversation."
Pak Kia looked at the two employees with a wait-and-see attitude.
Communication was important to her, especially between the team.
"It was my fault, I shouldn't have put him at the table with the boys," the orderly finally admitted, biting his lower lip and then looking up at the woman who had taken the last few days off.
It wasn't a long time, but she was already feeling much better. New energy flowed through her body, with which she could run the residence. Although her boyfriend had taken the lead during this time, as all three leaders had the same rank, he preferred to leave this to his lover. Like him, she always had a good rapport with the children and young people, but she was usually quicker to realize how to react.
"I should have remembered that Kai and Haechan aren't in the best of moods at the moment," Kim Jisoo added bitterly, thinking back to the conversation he'd had afterwards with the boy who'd almost hit someone.
Haechan wasn't always easy to understand, even when he tried to explain himself.
"You managed to avoid the worst, Jisoo," Pak Kia said, taking a step towards the two guardians. "Besides, you only wanted to do Yeonjun good. No one could have known that it would end in a fight." Her voice was warm, and she also managed to calm them both down. They were afraid that they had disappointed the leader. But Pak Kia herself knew how difficult it was and was incredibly glad to have such competent employees at her side. "I'm sure he'll settle in," she said with a slight smile on her lips before placing a hand on each of their shoulders. "We just need to give him a little push in the right direction."
