Recap

He gently lifted her head and held it in his lap, a hand lightly drawing shapes on her cheek while the other stayed firm on her chest, making sure she was still breathing.

Song: "Blue Catharsis" by Them and I.

In minutes there were cop cars surrounding the gas station. Firefighters and paramedics following behind them.

"Put your hands above your head where we can see them!" Someone yelled.

Ashtray stayed sitting and holding Reina as police walked up to him, aiming their firearms at him.

"I said put your hands up, boy!" They yelled again.

As they reach them, Ashtray looked up at them.

"If I move my hands she'll bleed out. Her head hasn't stopped bleeding." He said calmly.

The officers glanced at one another, their firearms still drawn at the boy and unconscious girl.

Without warning, Ashtray was being ripped off of Reina.

His wrist were grabbed and he was picked up and pushed on the pavement.

"No! She's bleeding!" He yelled, feeling his face get warm.

"You have the right to remain silent! Anything you say can and will be used against you!" Yelled the officer, holding his arms behind his back.

"She's bleeding on the floor!" Ashtray yelled, causing his face to be pushed into the floor. Only causing him to scream more.

The seconds that past felt like hours as he waited for paramedics, the sirens eventually faded and all he could focus on, was Reina.

She was there, unconscious and bleeding. Before he could protest, he was being dragged to a police car in handcuffs.

-

Ashtray bounced his leg as he waited in the questioning room. It had been maybe 45 minutes since he was taken to the police station.

His mind was occupied as he kept thinking about Reina. He knew nothing about what was going on, and he didn't like that.

It was getting late, and all he wanted was to take a nap and to make sure Reina was okay.

He lifted his head when the door opened and  watched as a familiar officer, who he'd seen at the gas station, walked in.

He handed Ashtray a bag of ice. Causing Ashtray to furrow his brows.
"Oh it's for the..." he stuttered, "the bruise." He said pointing to his face.

Oh, thank you." Ashtray said quietly. Taking the bag of ice and pressing it to his lightly bruised cheek.

"Well, my name is Michael Cordero. I'll be doing a short interview and just ask some questions on what happened." He explained.

"Don't I get a lawyer?" Asked Ashtray.

"Not unless you need one." Shrugged Michael, "But if you think so, then sure."

Michael stood, gesturing for Ashtray to follow. He led him out of the room and to a landline phone.

Ashtray hesitated, hoping he could remember.

He slowly picked up the phone and began dialing, recalling each and every number that Reina had told him.

It only took a few rings for them to pick up.
"Hey, it's me. Ash." He said. Michael watched intently.

"I'm at the police station by-" he said getting cut off, "okay, see you soon." He said, hanging up.

"Fast call." Said Michael, walking back to the room.

"Fast responders." Said Ashtray, following behind.

-

As Michael tapped his finger on the table, watching Ashtray as they both waited patiently for whoever he'd called.

Soon there was a knock at the door, another officer sticking his head in.
"I have a man here to see you and the kid." He said.

"Send him in." Said Michael, not looking away from Ashtray.

Soon he walked in, sitting next to Ash. Michael finally removed his gaze, focusing on the man.

Michael's mouth slightly parted,
"Owen?" His voice low.

"Hi Michael, haven't heard from you in a minute." Said Owen.

"If you wanna call 2, almost 3, years a minute. Then sure." Said Michael.

"What are you doing here though?" Asked Michael, "Is Reina okay?"

Ashtray looked up at Michael.
"How do you-" said Ashtray, cutting himself off.

"She's in the hospital." Said Owen.

"Is she okay?" They both asked.

"She's gonna be okay." Said Owen, patting Ashtray's shoulder.

He let out a sigh of relief.
"So how do you know Reina?" Asked Ashtray.

Owen and Michael looked at each other, Owen nodded in approval for him to tell the truth.

"I used to work with her mom, we met in the police academy." Said Michael.

"You're the Michael. Her Godfather?" Asked Ashtray.

"Yeah," he said, the memory of when Nadine asked him to be that role in Reina's life, replaying in his head.

"She still talks about me?" Asked Michael.

"Once, a while ago." Said Ashtray.

Michale only nodded as he remembered the last interaction they had, knowing they weren't on the best of terms.
