The door swung open at once. A tall, black-haired witch in emerald-green robes stood there. She had a very stern face, and Cassiopeia instantly knew that this was not someone to cross—not that she had any plans to. Instead, she exchanged a knowing glance with Katherine and Daphne, her partners in crime for whatever lay ahead.

"The first years, Professor McGonagall," said Hagrid.

"Thank you, Hagrid, I will take them from here."

She pulled the door wide, revealing the vast Entrance Hall. Cassie whistled under her breath. The place had an air of old magic, of history written in stone and firelight. It was grand, impressive—and definitely the kind of place where she could make a name for herself.

"Welcome to Hogwarts," said Professor McGonagall. "The start-of-term banquet will begin shortly, but before you take your seat in the Great Hall, you must be Sorted into your houses. The Sorting is a very important ceremony because, while you are here, your house will be something like your family. You will have classes with your housemates, sleep in your house dormitory, and spend free time in your house common room."

Cassie exchanged an amused glance with Katherine, who was already fidgeting nervously. "Told you," Cassie murmured. "Whole new family. You're stuck with me now."

McGonagall continued, "The four houses are called Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each house has its own noble history and has produced outstanding witches and wizards. While you are at Hogwarts, your triumphs will earn your house points, while any rule-breaking will lose house points."

Cassie chuckled at that last part. Rule-breaking? Now that sounded fun.

"The Sorting Ceremony will take place in a few minutes in front of the rest of the school. I suggest you all smarten yourselves up as much as you can while you are waiting."

Cassie ran a hand through her wavy blonde hair and straightened her robes with a lazy flick. "How do I look? Dashing? Mysterious? Irresistible?"

Daphne rolled her eyes. "You look like you're about to cause trouble."

"Well, that too," Cassie admitted, grinning.

"I shall return when we are ready for you," said Professor McGonagall. "Please wait quietly."

Cassie, Katherine, and Daphne huddled together as they waited, chatting in hushed voices. Their conversation was cut short when a group of ghosts suddenly glided through the back wall. They were pearly-white and slightly transparent, talking amongst themselves as they floated past the first years.

"Oh, Merlin," Katherine whispered, gripping Cassie's arm. "What if I don't get into Slytherin?"

Cassie slung an arm around her friend's shoulders and grinned. "Kat, you're the most Slytherin person I know. You've got ambition, you've got style, and you've got me. What more could the Sorting Hat want?"

Katherine gave a nervous laugh. "I hope you're right."

Daphne chuckled. "And if you don't, well, we'll just have to stage a coup and take over Hogwarts."

"Exactly!" Cassie said, snapping her fingers. "Now that's the Slytherin spirit."

Before they could continue, a sharp voice cut through the chatter. "Move along now. The Sorting Ceremony's about to start."

Professor McGonagall had returned.

"Now, form a line and follow me," she instructed.

Cassie exchanged one last confident glance with her friends. "Ready to take Hogwarts by storm?"

Katherine took a deep breath. "As I'll ever be."

"Then let's make this interesting," Cassie said with a wink, stepping forward, ready for whatever came next.

Woah, she's about to get sorted! Any guesses on which house she's going to end up in? It's pretty obvious, innit? ;)
