Cassie finally made it to the Great Hall, still feeling a little stiff from her injuries but more annoyed by the stares from some of her housemates. She ignored them as she slid into her usual seat at the Slytherin table.
"Where were you all this time?" Theo Nott asked, dropping into the seat beside her.
"In the hospital wing," she replied, reaching for a goblet of pumpkin juice. "Didn't you notice I wasn't here?"
Theo smirked. "I figured you were off causing some kind of chaos."
Cassie rolled her eyes. "Not this time."
Before Theo could reply, the Great Hall quieted as Dumbledore rose from his seat.
"Another year gone!" Dumbledore said cheerfully. "And I must trouble you with an old man's wheezing waffle before we sink our teeth into our delicious feast. What a year it has been! Hopefully, your heads are all a little fuller than they were... you have the whole summer ahead to get them nice and empty before next year starts."
Cassie exhaled, already sensing that something ridiculous was about to happen.
"Now, as I understand it, the House Cup here needs awarding, and the points stand thus: in fourth place, Gryffindor, with three hundred and twelve points. In third, Hufflepuff, with three hundred and fifty-two. Ravenclaw has four hundred and twenty-six, and Slytherin..." He paused, smiling faintly. "Four hundred and eighty-two."
The Slytherin table erupted in cheers. Draco Malfoy was banging his goblet on the table, and Pansy Parkinson was smirking smugly at the Gryffindors. Cassie smirked too, nudging Theo with her elbow.
"Nice to see our house actually win for once," she mused.
Theo leaned back in his seat, looking thoroughly pleased. "Finally," he agreed.
"Yes, yes, well done, Slytherin," Dumbledore continued. "However, recent events must be taken into account."
The room went still. Cassie tensed, sensing what was about to happen.
Dumbledore cleared his throat. "First—to Mr. Ronald Weasley—for the best-played game of chess Hogwarts has seen in many years, I award Gryffindor fifty points."
A wave of cheers erupted from the Gryffindor table, but Cassie only narrowed her eyes.
"This is ridiculous," she muttered under her breath.
Theo smirked. "Told you. He's always pulling something like this."
Dumbledore continued. "Second—to Miss Hermione Granger—for the use of cool logic in the face of fire, I award Gryffindor fifty points."
Cassie groaned, leaning back against the bench. "Of course."
"Third—to Mr. Harry Potter—for pure nerve and outstanding courage, I award Gryffindor sixty points."
At this, the Gryffindor table nearly exploded with excitement. Cassie rubbed her temples.
Theo shook his head. "You'd think they just won the Quidditch Cup."
"And finally," Dumbledore said, pausing for dramatic effect, "I award ten points to Mr. Neville Longbottom."
The Gryffindors screamed in celebration, and Cassie turned to Theo with a deadpan expression. "Are you kidding me?"
Theo just smirked. "Told you Slytherin never actually wins."
"So what about the fact that I almost died? That doesn't matter because I'm a Slytherin?" Cassie scoffed.
"Which means," Dumbledore called. "we need a change in decoration." He said before he clapped his hands. The green hangings turned into scarlet and the silver became gold.
