Foxpaw and Riversplash had arrived back at camp and Riversplash told her to get a good night's rest. Foxpaw nodded and went over to the nursery. But just as she was about to go in, Nightpaw appeared out of nowhere and stood in front of her. Foxpaw yelped in surprise but quickly closed her mouth. It was now getting dark outside and cats are probably sleeping right now.
"What are you doing out here?" Foxpaw hissed in surprise.
He rolled his eyes. "Glad to see you too. Did you have a good first day?" He asked, looking at her curiously.
Foxpaw nodded excitedly. "Yeah! We visited all of the borders and learned about each of the clans. I had no idea that Clover Clan was so big!" She whispered to him smiling widely.
He chuckled. "I'm glad you had fun and learned a lot."
"So what are you doing?" Foxpaw asked tilting her head-on confusion. "Shouldn't you be in your nest?"
"I could ask the same about you," Nightpaw countered winking. "Shouldn't you be going to the apprentices' den instead of the nursery. Last time I checked, you were an apprentice."
Foxpaw felt herself grow hot with embarrassment. "Of course I am! I was just..."
Nightpaw snorted. "Sure. Go ahead and make up some lame excuse. But if you're planning to sleep in the nursery, all my hard work to save you a nest next to me would be wasted," he said turning his back on her and started to walk towards the apprentices' den, tail high.
"Hey wait!" Foxpaw called quickly and padded quickly over to him. "You saved a nest for me?"
Foxpaw could barely see Nightpaw smile because the night sky had came out and was now dark. His pure black pelt blended perfectly with the night, as if they were best friends.
"Course! I can't just leave my new den mate stranded somewhere looking for a den in the back of a corner."
Foxpaw sniffed indignified. "As if." But a cold breeze blew against her fur. She shivered briefly before maintaining her posture.
Nightpaw frowned. "Come on. Let's get you warmed up. I already made your nest. It's next to mine," he said, pressing his fur into hers, lending his warmth to her as he lead her to the apprentices' den. She leaned into him grateful.
They both ducked inside and laid down in their nests. Foxpaw's looked like hers was much better than Nightpaw's. It was lined with feathers and there was no burrs or tough parts of moss in her nest. Foxpaw was even more grateful.
"You didn't have to do this," she whispered to him as he laid down next to her, not that far away.
He smiled. "Sure I did. It's your first day as an apprentice. You earned it."
"But you never had this when it was your first day," she protested.
Nightpaw rolled his eyes. "Yeah but I didn't really need it. Can't you just be thankful?"
Foxpaw purred. "This was a wonderful surprise. You warmed my heart. Thank you Nightpaw, this means a lot, really."
He beamed scooting closer to her. "I'm glad," he said to her with passion.
Foxpaw purred nuzzling his cheek before resting her head on her paws.
Nightpaw purred deeply licking her ear before scooting closer so that their pelts were touching and rested his head close to hers.
Foxpaw felt a smile on her face and slowly drifted off into a deep and peaceful sleep. And no dreams disturbed her that night...
