after the death of lucerys things just felt different to saphrona. their air between her and her niece almost felt...hostile in a way.

rhaenyra hadn't spoken to her aunt or uncle since the death of her son and they had retreated back into their castle at the vale. daemon was not ready to begin war talks with the fear of his own sons and daughter being killed, and saphrona had waited for aenor to contact her first.

rhaenyra felt slighted, in more ways than one. back in her castle, she grew darker and angrier with every waking second. why wasn't kassian there to receive her son? why didn't daemon mobilize the knights of the vale? and why wasn't saphrona sending her two targaryen children on dragon back to aid her effort? all of these questions were going unanswered as she had refused to contact her family.

aenor paced through the drawing room as rhaenyra mourned her son. "i just am at a loss rhaenyra. i do not possibly know why our aunt would do such a thing?" he was talking to himself more than he was his wife at this point.

"i do, she is a mother. just like me. the only difference is, i'm willing to send my sons to the slaughter for my throne and she is not willing to do the same with her children. honestly, do i blame her?" rhaenyra cried.

aenor had never been more angry in his life and he wasn't sure he would be. "so this is how we settle it with the greens. a child for a child. there is no other repayment." he growled, before leaving his and rhaenyra's chambers.

***********

meanwhile in the vale, saphrona was bed ridden for the first time in her adult life. she had never been this sick, with a mystery illness.

daemon and the maester at eyrie did most of the caretaking besides the woman's handmaiden. she had grown paler and paler by the day.

at this day, kassian had came in to his mother's chambers to read her all of the mail received by raven. he had just opened a letter from rhaenyra begging for the help of the knights of the vale.

deacon and dayana had both made their way into their mother's room to finish their studies. she felt just a tad better when her children were with her, this was the honest truth.

"mother, why does rhaenyra beg us for her help when she has many others willing to do her bidding?" dayana asked, too young to understand the spoils of war and politics just yet. in that aspect, daemon and her had sheltered their children.

the two of them had grown up in the thick of it all, saphrona being a bastard of a very important lord and daemon being a second son prince. it was a joy of theirs for their children to not experience what they had endured.

"well dayana, in war, the more allies you have the better off you are. more men to fight, more food, more weapons. you understand what i'm saying?" saphrona breathily answered. she was weak this morning.
