Chapter 06

" ...and they have drugged me ever since. I barely get to eat because I'm always unconscious. If, by any miracle I gain back conscious, they don't let me eat. Shalini bhabi hurts me at any chance she gets and Anurag Bhaiya keeps injecting those... I don't know. ", Saanchi stopped as she ran out of breath. She closed her eyes.

Abhay say beside her, horrified at everything she just told him.

" I pretended to be unconscious for some days to avoid getting drugged again. I finally ate so now I can atleast talk... ", Saanchi explained. " A week ago, I couldn't even open my eyes or form sentences, but I'm better now. "

Abhay got up in a hurry.

" We have to contact the police. Let's go, let's get out of here! ", he said and extended his hand to her.

Saanchi stared at his hands.

" I... can't escape... ", she muttered under her breath when a car horn interrupted their talk. Saanchi looked up and realised it was her brother's car, entering the colony. Anurag would be here any moment now.

" We can escape, Saanchi! All you have to do is trust me. " Abhay said, reaching out to her but fear gripped her. She ran back into the house and locked the door behind her.

Abhay repeatedly on the door, " Open the door! It's not safe for you in there. "

Inside, Saanchi hesitated. Her brain was still a mush from all the drugs injected in her. She wanted to escape but it was still difficult for her to take a decision.

Outside, Abhay realized that he won't be able to get Saanchi out of the house this time. Right now, he couldn't risk being caught by Saanchi's brother, Anurag so he ran out by the front yard and hide behind another house.

He watched Anurag's car drive by.

When Anurag parked his car and got down to head home, Abhay picked up a rock and started walking towards him. Anurag noticed someone following him so he turned to look, only to be attacked.

Abhay slashed the rock across his face and Anurag fell on the floor, intensely bleeding out on the floor.

The sound of the car engine reving up made Abhay snap back to reality. He was still behind the house while Anurag walked back into his house.

Visions of violently attacking him and putting an end to Saanchi's torment surfed around Abhay's head, but he resisted the urge.

Abhay quickly dialed the police.

" I am a delivery guy who works at Uber Eats. I just made a delivery at this house and I saw a girl inside who seems to have been drugged and is being held against her will. Please, you need to help her! "

As Abhay anxiously waited outside the house, each minute felt agonising. His heart raced, hoping that the police would come soon and arrest Saanchi's brother and sister-in-law.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the police arrived.

Abhay ran upto them.

" Officers, please help her! There is a girl called Saanchi in there. She has been trapped inside against her will! ", he said and two officers went in.

They, however, returned sooner than he expected. Abhay looked around hoping to see the couple being brought out with handcuffs, but they were alone.

Their expressions conveyed disappointment. Abhay's hope of getting her out of there crumbled.

" Why are you back? Why didn't you arrest them? Saanchi is in danger! ", he yelled but the officers didn't budge.

" The couple showed us a medical bill and it says that Saanchi has been undergoing treatment for a mental health condition. The 'drugs' you were talking about is just her medicine. ", one of the officers informed.

" It was a misunderstanding. The young girl has been mentally challenged since birth and she probably told you some gibberish... ", the other officer added.

Abhay was outraged but desperate.

" Are you guys being for real? You have to believe me! They are lying about her illness. She is being abused! ", he tried to explain but the officer got aggressive.

" Kid, do you think you know better than us? We saw that retarded girl in there. She isn't abused or whatever. ", the officer violently pushed him which made him falter on his steps.

Abhay realised that Saanchi was probably drugged again, which caused the police to believe she wasn't mentally stable.

" Now, if you don't want to end up in jail, mind your business and get out of here. ", the other rolled his eyes before heading back to their car.

He understood that the police were unwilling to see beyond their fabricated act. Abhay stood there helplessly as he watched the police car drive away.

" Now what? She is still in there and the police won't help... ", he whispered to himself. His gaze remained fixed on the house where Saanchi was trapped.

" I won't let this continue, Saanchi. I promise, I'll get you out of there at any cost... ", he whispered a promise to himself before walking away.
