The silence that hung between Saanchi and Abhay was broken with the police sirens outside. Soon, a police officer and two constable entered the living room abruptly.
The inspector looked strict and ruthless as he scanned the room and stopped at Anurag's lifeless body on the floor. Abhay was still on him, the crowbar gripped tightly in his palms while his eyes were still in a trance.
" I- Officer. This is just- ", Saanchi started but the inspector shot a glare at her, which shushed her up immediately.
" Save the stories, Miss Saanchi. Anurag Banerjee called me an hour ago to complain about you. How his life was endangered because of you but we were too late... ", he let out a sigh in guilt. Saanchi kept looking at Abhay, unsure of what their next plan of action would be but he didn't turn.
The inspector pushed him to the ground and threw the crowbar across the room. When Saanchi tried to stop, the female constable came in between and pulled her back.
" Inspector, I know this looks bad but Abhay didn't do anything! We're the victim, please don't hurt him! ", she cried out but the constable only tightened the grip on her, which made her stop and wince in pain.
" I don't think you should be defending him, Miss Saanchi. You're in deep trouble, even though he is the one who killed Anurag. ", inspector informed and then signalled his constables to get them out of there.
The woman constable handcuffed her while the other grabbed Abhay and dragged him out. The neighbours stare as the two as they were taken to the police jeep and pushed inside.
" Abhay, listen to me. ABHAY! ", Saanchi called out to him but he was still looking down, muttering whispers. Reality and imagination has blended for Abhay and he no longer understood what is real. His head was a mess so none of her words went through.
At the police station, they both were put inside the interrogation room. Just the sight of Abhay's bloody face made him furious, so he paced around the room.
The air was thick with tension.
" So your name is Abhay Verma, you are twenty two, couldn't find any family or relatives which means you're an orphan. You study at the local government college! You also work part time as a delivery guy at Uber Eats... ", the inspector read off a file and then looked up.
" Now explain to me, how and why you were at the Banerjee's house? And why did you kill Anurag? "" ...I killed him. ", Abhay repeated.
" No! He didn't kill anyone. I'm telling you that this is a misunderstanding! He didn't kill anyone, please! ", Saanchi tried to barge in but he didn't pay any heed. The inspector kept his eyes laser focused on Abhay.
" I know you killed him Abhay? I need to know the motive. I need to know exactly what happened? ", he asked. Abhay's eyes were still on the ground, trying to find some stability but committing a second murder got to him.
" I killed Anurag. I killed him! ", he managed to form a sentence somehow and the inspector exchanged a puzzled glance with his team.
" Enough of this nonsense!"
Annoyed and frustrated, inspector decided to take matters into his own hands. With a swift motion, he bashed his head against the wooden table and started beating him. The sound of him relentlessly beating him echoed throughout the dimly lit room.
Saanchi was horrified at the sight. Unable to watch, she stepped forward and wrapped herself around him to shield him from the blows.
" Stop! Please, stop! Abhay is just a little disturbed and traumatized by everything that happened. Please, you have to understand! ", she tries to explain but the inspector only smiled.
" He has already confessed to murder and I do not have any sympathy for killers. ", he said and stood up straight. He signalled two of his men to come in quickly.
" Miss Saanchi is free to go because her partner took all the blame. Throw her out. "The constable, following his orders, grabbed Saanchi away from Abhay. She fought desperately to remain by his side but the constable was far too stronger for her to resist. He pushed her outside the interrogation room.
" Sir, please- "
" Your concern for him won't change the fact that he killed someone. Now, leave and don't come back, unless you have solid evidence that says otherwise. ", he stated before placing another punch against Abhay's face.
Saanchi cried as she was forcibly escorted out of the police station, the door slammed shut behind her. She pounded on the door, pleading to be let back in but they didn't budge.
After sometime, she realised that the door wasn't going to open. She gave up and sat down on the stairs.
On the other hand, Abhay sat on the floor, battered and bruised while the inspector stopped to catch his breath and regain back some energy. He was determined that he wouldn't stop until Abhay told them what happened.
