Chapter 11

The evening air was thick with tension as Abhay dug into the soft soil of the backyard. The sound of the shovel hitting against the ground was the only sound in this quiet neighborhood.

Saanchi approached from behind.

" I've cleaned up all the blood... " she announced and Abhay stopped momentarily to wipe the sweat from his brow.

" Thanks, Saanchi. I'm almost done as well. ", he said and continued digging up the ground. Shalini's dead body laid right next to the piled up dirt.

" I've been meaning to ask you something for sometime now- ", Saanchi looked around nervously, " Why have you been so good to me, even though we're practically strangers? "

Abhay stopped to look at her.

" I have been going through a really bad time. Everything I did went wrong, everywhere I went, I met with disappointment. I was this close to giving up.... when I met you. "

" What did I do? ", she asked back.

Abhay hesitated, his gaze shifting to the ground. " You were the kindest anyone has ever been to me. All this is my way of repaying that kindness. "

Saanchi smiled, touched by his words but also she also disappointed with his answer- All this while, she assumed he had deeper feelings for her, which is why he is always so worried for her.

" Is that the only reason? ", Saanchi asked and Abhay goes silent for a moment before a small smile tug at his lips. Saanchi understood his unspoken response and smiled.

Silence fell between them while Abhay completed digging and pushed Shalini's dead body in. Saanchi came forward to help him fill up the hole.

As they pushed in the dirt, Saanchi looked up at Abhay.

" You said you wanted to tell me something about my family? ", Saanchi asked, curiosity and concern in her eyes.

Abhay was grateful for the reminder and sat up excitedly.

" Right! I keep forgetting because of everything that has been happening," Abhay said before pulling out his phone, opening an email from Katha.

He showed Saanchi her family will.

Saanchi's eyes widened in shock as she read the contents of the document.

" You're the sole inheritor in your family's will. Your brother is adopted which is why he is excluded. Also the main reason why he is doing what he's doing..." Abhay started explaining but when she saw Saanchi's eyes tearing up, he paused.

" Anurag Bhaiya is... adopted? "

" Yes. "

Saanchi's tear-stained eyes moved across the pages of the will, as she read the shocking piece of document. Abhay wanted to comfort her but as he took a step forward, she instinctively moved away.

" He planned and plotted just to get my money!? He could have just asked me. He's my only family, the brother I grew up with. If he had just asked, I would have given him every penny I had... ", she let out a breath of disbelief.

Abhay continued, " Your brother will try to either kill you or prove you're mentally unstable before you turn twenty one so that, as his guardian, he receives all your money. "

" Oh..." Saanchi holds back a sob.

Abhay further inquired, " By the way, when do you turn twenty-one? "

" 18th October, this year... "

" 18th October, you mean you turn twenty-one in a month! Oh fuck... ", Abhay's voice became urgent.
" I'm sure your brother will act before then. We have to be prepared. "

Her voice trembled as she asked,
" Wh-What should I do then? "

" You have to kill him before he kills you. That's the only way. ", Abhay stated and she gasped.

" What? You want me to... kill him!? ", she said and Abhay realised how insensitive his words were. He quickly moved closer and gently cupped her face.

" You don't have to do anything. I'll handle whatever needs to be done, I promise. " He assured her before returning to the disheveled ground and stomping on it to make it as even as possible.

Just then, Abhay's phone rang and he saw that it was Tejas calling. He had swapped his evening shift with Tejas' night shift to be with Saanchi today.

" I should leave now. " Abhay said, reaching for his phone. However, Saanchi quickly grabbed his hands.

" Please stay with me tonight... "

Abhay was shocked at her request but he knew couldn't. This was the only job he has and loosing this means loosing his only way to feed or clothe himself.

" I have to work the night shift to keep the job. I have to go, but I promise I'll be a call away. Call me if you're in any danger, and pretend you have no idea where Shalini is when your brother comes back. I'll come soon. "

Saanchi was disappointed but understood his plight. As Abhay started to walk away, their hands reluctantly parted, the tips of their fingers lingering before they parted ways for the night.
