ELLIE POV:

I heard footsteps approaching and there was a knock on the bedroom door..

"Come in." I said,
squeezing (Y/N)'s hand
A deep dread beginning to creep up on me

It was Tommy.

It was time to go.

We Both followed him out of the house and to the stables, holding hands for comfort, shivering as the cold winter air hit our faces.
My gaze fell to my boots as we approached the stable and I realised that this was it.

"Joel?" (Y/N) gasped,

I threw my head up eyes widening in surprise
Standing by a horse attaching a pack to its saddle, was Joel..

Why was he here?

"You came here to say goodbye or something?"
I asked, in a harsh tone, still upset from the fight we had the previous night

"No, I came here to steal one of these horses and go."
He admitted.

"I woulda gave you one." Tommy said to his brother

"I know." Joel said,
finishing with the saddle,
"Anyway... that was thirty minutes ago, and I guess..."
He walked up to me and (Y/N) sighed and said

"You deserve a choice. I still think you'd be better off with Tommy—"

As soon as I had processed what he was trying to say I shoved my supply bag into his arms, pulled a grinning (Y/N) with me over to the horse and began petting it

"Let's go." I turned back to Joel

"Okay." he said.

We led the horse outside, and Joel helped boost me and (Y/N) up into the saddle, as we were too short to get up ourselves

"Hold onto both." Joel handed me the reins.
"General direction?"
He asked turning to Tommy

"Head southeast till you hit I-25. It's right off the interstate. Shouldn't be hard to miss." Joel nodded,
thanking Tommy before They pulled each other into a hug,
"There's a place for you here. All three of you."

"Countin' on it," Joel replied.

Upon Hearing this I looked behind me at (Y/N) to see if she had heard, and saw the huge smile on her face and knew.

"See it all worked out"
(Y/N) smiled,
Her infectious smile causing me to break the stoic expression I had prior

I quickly glanced down at her lips
Then back up to see her cheeks which had turned crimson red

"You're adorable"
I giggled tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, smirking as she leaned into my touch

"Can I borrow that?"
Joel gestured to Tommy's rifle

"Yeah." Tommy took it off and handed it over
"Cause Maria took mine, you know."

"I already said yes, Joel. Adios, big brother."

The main gate to Jackson opened for us and Tommy walked beside the horse until we were out, signalling it to be closed behind us.
