I waited at À la russe restaurant. It's Asante's dad restaurant. The one based in Sandton. My mom walked in and came to my table.
"How are you, son?" She asked genuinely. But she out of everyone should expect me not to be okay.
"We are not here for that. Why arranged marriage?" I got straight to the point.
"You remember how you and Thandolwethu used to be friends? You were such close friends and Gcina and I thought it would be a great idea if you can get married in the future. It was just something we said playfully. We didn't mean it or I didn't mean it. Gcina told her husband and he thought it would be such a great idea. He told your dad and he refused." I didn't know that. Why did mom mention anything?
"It doesn't look like dad refused though." I pointed out.
"Oh he did. Everything was well but Ngwenya took it as an insult. He hired a PI to investigate your dad. He found out about the heists and all the family businesses. He gathered enough evidence to take us to jail. He blackmailed us. He made us sign a contract. We thought he forgot about it but he pressurized recently. We will lose everything and death is not a solution. We can't take him out." I could hear the desperation in her voice.
"I love someone Mom. I can't hurt her like that." She held my hands.
"I'm sorry Nathi. You know that I can do anything for you right?"
"I know Mom."
"I trust you to make a great decision. Your father is very sorry about last night. We are all frustrated. Pop in sometimes." She kissed my hands before she left.
I couldn't believe what I heard. I last heard from Thando around ten years ago. I know she exist and she's following me on Instagram but she never texted or anything.
I received a message from Asante this morning and she said she's not feeling well. I need to check up on her. I stood up and settled my bill then drove to the mall. I went to the florist and bought her some sunflowers and then I bought her two novels and a teddy bear.
I drove to her home. I hope her dad would allow me to see her. The security did a checking as I drove in.
I took the things that I brought for her and walked to the main door. I knocked once and before I could knock again, the door opened and a young girl opened the door.
"Hi. Can I help you?" She had an accent. K don't think she's from here.
"I'm Nkosinathi. I'm looking for Asante." I told her.
"You're her boyfriend? This girl didn't tell me she's dating let alone with such a hottie. Do you have a brother? Cousin? Help a girl out." She's too talkative and she's annoying me.
"Is Asa in?"
She cleared her throat."Sorry. What was your name again? Ng—cos…" She couldn't pronounce my name very well.
"Nkosinathi." I said it for the last time.
"Who's at the door?" Another girl walked to the door. I recognised this one to be Asante's little sister Adelaide.
"Nkosi? Hi. Come in." She pushed the small one and opened the door further. I walked in. Their home is cosy.
"Come this side." I followed her upstairs and she stopped in front of a room. She knocked on the door.
"Asa? Nkosi is here to see you." She announced and the door opened revealing Asante who seemed to be crying.
"Thank you Addy." Adelaide gave her a nod and walked away. I walked inside the room. It looked like a room that belonged to Asante. You could just tell from the bookshelf full of books.
