nineteen - fleeting

"SPENCER!" Daisy snapped again, pacing as fast as she could after the teen. He had her by a foot and he wasn't making it any easier pacing towards the school gates at top speed. "Spencer White." She stopped, her expression more than irritated, "Stop walking away from me." She hissed and finally he slowed to a stop, just outside the school gates swivelling to face her.

"What the fuck is wrong with you." Daisy's nose scrunched in disgust, her cheeks heated in a way he hadn't seen before. Her words only seemed to rile him up more and he took the remained steps behind them towering over her. She couldn't help but shuffle back a step and hurt flushed over his features.

"What the fuck is wrong with me?" He chucked sourly, running a shaky hand through his hair, "Am I wrong?" He seethed, "Dusty hasn't been to school in almost a week because of Harper." He spat as Daisy's glare hardened.

"Dusty decided to get messy and fuck his girlfriend and another dude, then he dumped her because she wanted it too much." She snapped, "Let that fucking register Spencer, do you think Dusty is truly in the right?" She laughed half-heartedly, though Spider didn't budge.

"SPENCER!" Daisy snapped again, hurrying after him through the crowded footpath outside the school. He was a good foot taller than her and walking like he was trying to outrun the conversation entirely. "Spencer White."

He kept going.

"Stop walking away from me."

The sharpness in her voice finally did it.

Spider slowed just outside the school gates, jaw tight as he turned to face her. Cars rushed past behind him, students lingering nearby before wisely deciding to move on. Daisy crossed her arms over her chest, breathing hard from trying to keep up.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" she shot back.

His expression darkened instantly.

Daisy's nose scrunched in disgust, cheeks flushed pink with anger in a way he hadn't seen before. Usually she laughed things off. Usually she rolled her eyes and moved on. But this, this had gotten under her skin.

Her words only seemed to rile him up more. Spider closed the remaining distance between them, towering over her without meaning to. Daisy instinctively shuffled back a step. The movement hit him immediately.

Hurt flashed across his face before he could hide it. "What the fuck is wrong with me?" he echoed bitterly, dragging a shaky hand through his hair. "Am I wrong?" His voice rose. "Dusty hasn't been to school in almost a week because of Harper."

He spat Harper's name like it tasted rotten. Daisy's glare hardened. "Dusty decided to get messy and fuck his girlfriend and another dude, then dumped her because she wanted it too much." Her voice cracked with disbelief. "Let that fucking register, Spencer. Do you seriously think Dusty's completely innocent here?"

She laughed once, humourless and sharp, but Spider didn't move. "He's my mate."

"And Harper's not the only one at fault here."

"That doesn't mean she gets to destroy him."

Daisy stared at him for a second like she genuinely couldn't believe what she was hearing. "Destroy him?" she repeated. "Jesus Christ, you boys always do this."

Spider scoffed. "Do what?"

"Act like girls are psychos for reacting to shit you caused." Daisy threw her hands up. "Dusty cheated on her, embarrassed her, then dumped her because she was 'too much.' But Harper lashes out and suddenly she's the villain?"

"She embarrassed him, Daisy."

"And he humiliated her first!" The words echoed louder than she intended. For a second, neither of them spoke. Spider's chest rose and fell hard, eyes fixed on her like he was trying to decide whether to keep fighting or walk away again.
