I sit in my truck, tapping my finger impatiently on the steering wheel. I have an hour between jobs today and for some reason, I drove to campus and parked my truck in front of the bubble tea shop. I'm sweaty, dirty, and truly the only thing I want right now is that blueberry drink thing that Y/n's friend made for me. It's so stupid. I don't know if she's working or what the drink is called. I just...want it.
I pull a hand through my hair, staring at the shop in front of me. It's so girly and feminine that the thought of me walking in there right now actually makes my stomach turn.
But I pull the keys out of the car and walk to the front door anyways, cringing at the sound of the doorbell announcing my entrance.
"Hello! Welcome in--Toji?"
I walk up to the counter with my hands in the pockets of my loose cargos. Elaine is behind the counter, watching me approach with a look of disbelief on her face. Her eyes are wide. But then again, her eyes are always a little wide.
"Hey."
"Hi," she says, wiping her hands on a towel and approaching the counter. "What...brings you in here today?"
"I was...around," I say nonchalantly, picking up a menu to read. What I want isn't even on the menu.
"Oh," she says softly, watching me. I notice she's wringing her hands, nervous energy pouring off of her.
I sigh. Is she scared of me? After that night with Y/n?
I guess I did have a gun.
Guns are scary to people, I get it.
"I'll just have that blueberry thing you made the other day," I say, setting the menu back down. She stares down at it, not meeting my eyes.
"Okay," Elaine turns to start making my drink, not saying anything else.
I shift on my feet, crossing my arms.
I watch her work, moving around the small kitchen with ease. She adds so many different things to the cup that it almost seems like she's mixing potions back there. I did not know so much went into these drinks.
She's wearing another one of those outfits. Today it's some sort of flowy looking pink shirt thing and light jean shorts. And they're short. I take a breath and avert my eyes, staring blankly at the wall decorations in front of me.
"Here you go," Elaine says, pulling my attention back to the counter. "I, uh, added some blueberry popping pearls in there. I don't know...I thought maybe you'd like them."
I nod, not really sure what a blueberry popping pearl is. "Sure, thanks."
"It'll be $4.75," she says, tapping the card reader with her finger. Her nails are long and have glittery polish on them. I covertly look at my own nails as I pull out my card. There's dirt under them.
We're both quiet as the machine reads my card.
"I didn't charge you for the popping pearls," she adds.
I look at her. "Why?"
She wrings her hands and the card reader beeps. I remove my card, shoving it back into my wallet. "You...really helped out the other day. With Y/n. I don't know what would have happened if you hadn't shown up. I was so scared...and you came. So, this is thank you. The pearls are on me."
"I knew he'd try some bullshit," I rub a hand over my jaw. "I knew it'd come to that. I'm glad you texted."
I should be thanking her. If she hadn't been there, I don't know what would have happened to my sister.
