I heard a knock on my door and I immediately knew who it was. My mom.
I looked at the clock and saw that it was 1:03. My mom was actually on time. I got up and shook all my sadness out of my body to prepare for this. I smiled a small smile to try and lighten my mood but it didn't help. I walked to my door and grabbed the knob. I waited a second and then opened it.
There stood my mother texting. She looked up when she realized I was standing there. She smiled quickly and hugged me. I hugged back, but not with much effort.
"Hi honey! Long time no see!" She said as she walked into my house. I shut my door and rolled my eyes.
"Mom, it has been like, a week. Barely even a week." I said. We both sat on the couch.
"Well, it has been really quiet around the house ever since you left. It's lonely." She said frowning.
Your probably wondering if I have a dad, right? Well I do. He is just across the world serving in the army. I haven't seen him in person for 2 years. It has been Skype and phone calls. It's crazy. I love him so so much. He felt bad that he couldn't be there to help me during the dark times, but he inspires me everyday.
"Why are you here?" I asked out of the blue, clearly getting aggravated.
"Listen, Lola-baby, we need to talk about...Marcus." She said and I gritted my teeth in my mouth. This is it. She wants to take the one I love away from me.
"What mom?! What do we have to discuss about him?" I said raising my voice.
"Calm down sweetie. I just, need to clear some stuff up with you," she said and I tried to calm myself down. "I did tell Marcus to date you."
When she said that I felt tears sting against my eyes but I was refusing to cry. I wasn't going to seem weak in front of her. Even if I did for a few years, not this time. I'm an adult now. I don't need my mom to see me cry and say I do need her right now, because I don't.
"And he told me, that he told you about it. I got upset with him. I..." she got quiet. "I threatened to take you away from him. I said I would take it all away from him. So that's what I want to do."
My head was filled with so many thoughts, it felt as it was going to explode. Who's side was I on? What does all of this mean? Does Marcus like me or not? All of this was putting so much on me.
"M-mom...I thought you wanted the best for me?" I said stuttering, almost at tears.
"I do honey! I just wanted to make sure you didn't ruin your new life!" She exclaimed. I opened my mouth in anger.
"You thought I was going to ruin my life?! How old am I again?"
"Listen I just thought you-"
"I am too old for you to sit around caring about MY life! I make MY own decisions! You don't decide what I do. And because of your stupid little talk with Marcus, I don't trust him. I don't know his actual feelings for me. I will never know what he does out of love!" I yelled. "Is that what you want for me? A life with no trust for anyone?"
My mom was sad. I could tell. She had red eyes ready to cry, which actually hurt to see. She looked down.
"Lola, I wasn't afraid you were going to ruin you life," she looked up. "I was afraid other people were going to ruin it. I was afraid you wouldn't get to live your life." She softly said. My face softened and I took a few breathes.
"Mom, what am I supposed to do now?" I asked, finally letting tears come out. My mom stood up and sat next to me on the couch and hugged me.
"Sweetie, you go talk to him. Talk to him. Ask him stuff you want to know. Let him know how you feel," she explained. "I am so sorry. I just wanted you to be okay."
That's when I realized it. That's when it all came together. My mom wasn't trying to hurt me, or make Marcus do anything. She wasn't trying to ruin my life or take Marcus away from me.
She was trying to help me.
She was trying to keep her only kid safe.
She was worried that I would get depression again.
We said our final goodbyes and she left. I thought of all this let me deserve a small nap.
