"I got it! I got my drivers license! I'm so happy!!!" I basically yelled into the phone. I'm talking to Marcus and telling him this great news.
"Yeah! That's great!" He responded, sounding as excited as me. I danced around my kitchen with my license in my hand.
"Got to go Marky, gonna tell my mom!" I exclaimed and heard him say bye before I hung up. I then quickly dialed my mom's number and waited for her to pick up.
"Hello?" Said my mom on the other line.
"Guess what!?" I asked loud and clear. I looked at my picture on the license and nodded at how good it was.
"What?!" She answered recognizing my voice.
"I got my drivers license!" I danced around again, luckily nobody watching. My mom said 'woo' in joy. I laughed and sat down on my couch.
"I'm proud of you Lola," She said and I grinned. "You should come visit me tomorrow. I have a surprise for you."
"Really? Is it a red convertible?" I asked. My mom chuckled.
"No, it's not." I laughed and said bye to her. Now thinking about it, I should get a car. I have been taking taxis and walking to work. I put my phone down and shrugged. I decided to start getting ready for bed considering it was 7:30. I went to my room and threw on some Abercrombie sweatpants and a oversized t-shirt that Marcus let me keep. I threw my hair up and climbed into bed. It was really quiet in my house. I was by myself, which made me scared to death sometimes. I pulled the covers up close to my chin and listened to the nothingness. I can't do this. I got out of bed and strolled to my living room.
I put on the TV and watched so I was doing something other than creeping myself out. I put on some random TLC show and sighed. I leaned on some pillows and relaxed. Just as I was about to drift off a loud knocking was heard upon my door. I shot up in fear. I snuck down on the ground and crawled like I was in a spy movie. I quietly reached the door and looked through the peephole which was thankfully installed by my mom.
I saw a guy my age with dark brown hair. He had his hands in his pockets and he was looking at his shoes. Just now I realized it was raining and he was soaked. I felt bad but I didn't know what to do. He looked up and knocked again. He seemed pretty desperate so I gave in and opened up the door. He looked at me and i awkwardly stood there in my pajamas, wondering what the hell he wanted.
"Oh, um," he coughed. "My car broke down and um, I was wondering if maybe I could use your phone or something." He looked away seeming embarrassed. I was a nice person so of course I said yes and let him into my house.
"So, um" I could feel a stutter coming on to the tip of my tongue. I promised myself in my head I wouldn't stutter in front of this person. It seemed like good anxiety practice. "What's you name?" He turned around and looked at me.
"I'm Joey." He put his hand out. I stared widely at him. Was he who I thought he was...? He seemed oddly familiar. I slowly put my hand out and shook his.
"I'm L-Lola." I answered. I swore in my head for stuttering. He then stared back at me. I looked down at my feet strangely.
"Lola...Duggins?" He asked and I immediately looked up. Joey took a step closer to me and I swallowed hard and nodded. He gaped his mouth and smiled. I smiled back because I wasn't really expecting this reaction. He came forward and hugged me. I filled with joy. I wrapped my arms around him.
He was the one who saved me when no one else was there. He was the one who helped when I came crashing down. He mattered in my life. I was so lucky to have him.
"Oh Joey, I missed you." I said feeling tears ready to fall. But I obviously wasn't going to cry in front of him. Joey wanted me to not cry all these years, so why should I do it now?
"Oh God Lola, you have such a nice house!" Joey said pulling off. He looked around and sighed in relief. "I'm so glad I bumped into you, and not some creepy stranger-prostitute person." I laughed and I sat on the couch with him next to me.
"We should talk. Like, catch up with each other after all these years." I suggested, and that's what we did.
We talked about me moving and him moving. We talked about my first date with Marcus. We talked about his amazing guitar skills. We talked about how I almost got kidnapped. We talked about lots and lots of things. We laughed and we frowned. We told each other about anything and everything. It was like a family reunion. Except we were the only ones there and we aren't family.
"Wow Lola, I never thought I would see you again." He said and I smiled and blushed like a little girl. Joey really was a friend to me.
"Same here." I agreed.
"So, you have a boyfriend now... That's great!" He exclaimed. I saw the look in his eyes that meant, "I really don't care."
I nodded and turned the subject to him. "What about you? You never mentioned a girlfriend."
He looked away and fakely smiled. Was he embarrassed? Should I have not asked?
"No, I don't." He awkwardly responded. Joey seemed like boyfriend type. I shrugged it off and asked if he wanted to stay later, instead of going back out into the rain. He said sure and I connected my phone to the TV for Netflix. We both choose Expelled, but actually I just picked it because of Cameron Dallas and then begged for Joey to watch it. Then I got comfortable on the couch and watched the comedy.
