Nevada's P.O.V
The Next Morning
Waking up to the smell of rotting pine is beginning to agitate me. I turned to the side where Jeff was sleeping last, but of course, he was gone. Typical. I got up scratching the sides of my thighs. These fucking mosquito bites, back in my apartment I would have just hung one of those overpriced gnat tapes to the ceiling but that privilege has longed disappeared. For a while I just stood there idling in the middle of my bedroom. Everything looked the same as it once did last night, but something in the air was...off. Suddenly I heard wood creaking from the kitchen area of the cabin. With every second the creaking became louder and louder. I gently followed the noise until I managed to hear someone talking aggressively. Leaning in closer I could make it out to be Jeff's voice.
"Don't you think I fucking know that?" Jeff debated to whomever he was speaking to. Worried, I walked up just before the kitchen doorway and hid near the bookcase receiving perfect view and sound of Jeff's phone conversation. His eyes were bright red while diamond like sweat droplets fell from his face crashing into the broken floor tiles.
"...But Slender! I don't need the list anymore, I can control it. I won't hurt anyone...I won't hurt her..." My whole body quivered in fear as Jeff whispered the last words into the phone. I won't hurt her...Who is he talking about? Better yet, what is this list?
"...Fuck you, you know that isn't true. I know I have changed slightly but only because it's my job to. I'm still am who I was before her. Killing is in my DNA now and I have accepted that fact decades ago." Jeff paced the minuscule room running his fingers over the counter tops then slamming his fist into them.
"I can make that decision for myself. Just tell her we'll be ready soon. Very soon." With that, Jeff threw the phone onto the floor running his hands through his hair. I motioned quietly into the kitchen careful not to startle him. I walked towards the coffee maker placing a new filter at the top of it. He didn't even bat an eye.
"...You want any?" I waved the empty Easter decorated mug in front of him but he didn't acknowledge it. As the mug filled with the steaming hot dark beverage, I sat at the dining counter directly facing him. He glanced up letting his jet black hair crumpled down into his face. Sitting down across from me, he swept it all away with one hand and giggled.
"So, how much of that did you hear?" He asked me through muttering as he gazed into my eyes.
"What list is he talking about Jeff? What's going on with you?" I tried to contain myself, but I couldn't help it. Jeff always feels as though he needs to protect me from everything and everyone like an infant child. But that's just the problem...I'm not.
"Remember how I told you a while ago about the list of people who I had to kill in order to feed. How those people on that list had to die, that me killing them wouldn't matter regardless?" I nodded my head as I got up to get the mug from the coffee maker. I brought it back to my seat and listened to Jeff continue.
"Well my old list...expired. Slender was calling to tell me that my new list was still with him and that it's been a couple months and I still haven't picked it up. He accused me of becoming too soft. That I have lost sight of my duties because of Melody...because of you..." Jeff paused and I took a drawn out sip of coffee letting the liquid burn into my tongue a bit. For some reason this information didn't shock me much. When exactly was the last time I saw Jeff kill or eat? Even if it's hard for me to admit it, he has been sort of...slacking.
"So, do you agree?" I questioned hiding my lips behind the warm mug.
"What do you mean Nevada? You know I have slowed things down since Eli's death, but that's not making me...soft?" This time he sounded a bit unsure.
"All I am saying is he isn't all wrong about you Jeff. You've been really stressed lately, and I have been taking a real toll on you as well. Maybe you should go get that list." My words were genuine although I wish weren't. Jeff got up from the table coming over to the side that I was sitting at. His presence behind me resembled the feeling of a radiator on ice cold winter mornings. My back skin quivered. Waking me from my thoughts, he jerked on the back of my shirt as if gesturing for me to get up.
"Jeff I'm serious. If you think pulling me away to mess around is going to change my mind then..." Jeff spun me around in the chair to face his gaze. Leaning inward, he periodically moved his frozen pale fingers over my cheeks, down my lips, then over my cheeks once more. I became a freshly brewed caramel cappuccino in his hands. I placed my hands on his shoulders yanking his whole upper body closer into my chest, and then I laid my head on him.
"You're right as always Neva. I'm hungry and I can't keep denying it any longer, but I can't leave you here alone. I promised you a day alone with me and I refuse to break yet another one of my promises to you..." I've heard Jeff say many kind hearted things to me in past. Some genuine and others a phrase just to slip himself out of trouble, but something about what he just said made me actually believe it.
"We can just reschedule. I don't mind." My words lurched out my mouth suddenly before I could make any sense of them.
"No." Jeff stood from my grip. Within seconds he flashed into the bedroom and sped back to where he was initially standing with his knife in one hand and my black hoodie in the other.
"No?" I stood baffled at his previous statement.
"Neva, you're coming with me." Smirking, he held out my hoodie towards me. I grabbed it unsure if he was being for real or bluffing. I hadn't been out of this place in...I can't even remember.
"Really?" Noticing my uneasiness about his offer he jolted over to me, wrapping his arms around my waist, squeezing the air out of my lungs.
"Think of this as our first official date!" He laughed and I chuckled at the idea of me and Jeff on a legit "date".
"Great, my first date with you and I'm wearing worn-out sweat pants and a hoodie... Soooo enticing." I mumbled sarcastically. Hearing my quiet mumbles, Jeff bent to reach my height then kissed my forehead.
"If you wore anything else, you would be too beautiful. Now let's go." He pulled opened the wooden barrier letting me walk first in front of him trying my best to contain my school girl smile creeping onto my lips.
Too beautiful.
Too beautiful.
Too beautiful.
