When I got home, tired from the day, I went straight to my room. I saw a glass and a water bottle on the table next to my bed. My throat was dry from the day, so I wanted some water.
I poured water into the glass and drank it all quickly. It felt good and made me feel better right away. I felt relaxed and took a deep breath.
But Vibhav's words made me feel anxious. I whispered to myself, "Is he really going to hurt me and my family?"
The ticking sound from the clock on the wall, right in front of my bed, caught my attention.
I glanced at it and noticed it was almost 2 PM. Anirban would come to pick me up at 5 PM. I thought to myself, why bother changing when what I'm wearing is already perfect? With that in mind, I lay down to rest.
But rest, in a joint family, is a joke. I closed my eyes for just a second when I heard a knocking sound.
Furrowing my eyebrows, I thought to myself, just ignore it. But then, someone knocked on my door again, and a voice called out my name, "Mehu didi!"
I debated ignoring her once more. Then, she persisted, "Didi, open the door! I need to talk." Rolling onto my side, my face away from the door, I couldn't hold back anymore.
I screamed, "I don't want to! You go!" My frustration was evident in my voice .
Now that no one was knocking, I muttered to myself, "First time, she listened to me!"
But then, I heard the sound of my door opening, and she pounced on me as usual, her habit unchanged. "I'm still not listening to you, Mehu didi,"
she declared. I screamed in pain, "Ouch! Naina! Please change your habits!" But she didn't feel bad for her actions; instead, she started giggling.
She giggled and said, "No! I will not change."
I said to her in a stern voice, "Can you please move aside so I can sit?" She replied, "Yes, yes, sure," and moved out of the way.
I asked her in irritation, "Today, whoever I'm talking to is making me irritated. Now, what do you want from me?"
She pouted and replied, "You're so mean! I'm just here to listen to what happened when you met Vibhav. I'm not asking for any favours! Fine, I'll go."
She turned to leave, I grabbed her hand and said, "Go lock the door! Then I'll tell you."
She beamed with happiness and exclaimed, "Roger, captain!"
I smiled as she quickly locked the door and then sat beside me, leaning against the headboard of my bed. We were ready to talk.
Naina looked at me with her puppy eyes, her curiosity palpable. "Now tell me the whole details!" she pleaded.
I recounted everything that had transpired in the cafe, and Naina's expression grew serious. "I'm getting bad feelings from that guy," she admitted.
I nodded, feeling the weight of uncertainty pressing down on me. "Me too. I don't know what he will do," I confessed, lowering my gaze.
We sat in silence for a moment, the tension thick in the air. Then, Naina posed the same question that Vibhav had asked me, "Didi, do you really love Anirban Da?"
