"Chanda... can you bring me some peanut butter bread? I... I want to eat something," I said, my voice barely a whisper, a fragile thread trying not to snap.
My hands twisted the edge of my shirt which he.. yes he ordered his servants to buy for me , again and again, pulling it tighter around me as though it could protect me from everything that had gone wrong. The room was cold despite the heavy drapes, or maybe it was just me ,hollowed out from the inside, shivering with something more terrible than mere chill.
I stared at the floor. The marble tiles blurred in my vision, tears gathering but refusing to fall. I felt... empty and Isolated.
Like someone had plucked me from the world and dropped me into a glass jar without any reason. I could see outside in my mind, I pictured my father , my mother laughing with the neighbor.
But I couldn’t touch any of it. Couldn’t even tell if they still remembered me, or if the days slipped by for them as easily as for me.
Did they worry? Did they search? Or did they simply... move on?
Vibhav’s words crawled through my skull like worms. If I lose interest, I’ll kill you. He had said it so simply, as if it was a promise he might keep out of boredom. And then he didn’t come. Not for days.
Maybe he was already bored. Maybe I was only ever a passing fancy. A possession. Something to lock up and forget. He is a physco
I clenched my hands, nails biting into my palms until I flinched. Even the pain was muted, like it belonged to someone else. I caught sight of my reflection in the dark glass of the window hair tangled, eyes wide and lost, shoulders caved inward.
A ghost. That’s what I was becoming.
When Chanda finally entered with the small plate, I tried to sit up straighter, to look less broken. But my body betrayed me — my shoulders sagged, my hands trembled when I took the bread.
“Thank you,” I murmured. My lips twitched, trying to form a smile. It fell away.
Chanda lingered, her eyes soft with pity. I hated it. I wanted anger, outrage, anything to remind me I was still worth feeling something about.
When she left, I picked at the bread, crumbling it between my fingers. The smell of peanut butter rose up, thick and sweet, but it made my stomach twist instead of rumble.
I was alone again. Alone with my thoughts that gnawed at me more hungrily than hunger ever could.
Was I waiting for him to come back? Or for him to finally end this? End me .
I couldn’t tell anymore.
I glance at the clock on the wall.
10:30 p.m.
Time trudges on, uncaring, while I sit here ..stranded in this gilded cage, heart heavy with dread and loneliness.
My eyes drop to the bread on my plate. Peanut butter smeared thick, exactly how I used to like it.
I stare at it for a long moment, then tear off a small piece, shove it into my mouth, chew. The sticky sweetness clings to my tongue, refusing to go down. I force it anyway, gulp after painful gulp. It scratches all the way, lodging hard in my throat. I cough, eyes watering.
That’s when I see it.
By the side table, a shard of glass glints under the lamplight a cruel little smile carved from crystal. Chanda had dropped a water glass earlier, fumbling in her nervousness.
