If I Don't Call - Leroy Gibbons
Clay Smith POV

"There's no title that he can't win!"

"it comes so easy to him."

"He's got a level of confidence that's so beyond!"

"He believes there's not a bull in the world that can buck him off.."

Watching this man on a screen ride out the full eight seconds on the toughest athletes, that man is some people's idols, that man is a hero, that man is going to make history some say...that man..is me.

There's many competitors that probably picked that easier one, or that one that's good to ride..
They're gonna win some money no doubt. but at the end of the day you ain't gonna to hear their name..whose name do you hear? Clay Smith.

Some people tell me my ego's too high, but i'm the best  there is, pick and ride out anything. i believe i'm the one written amongst the stars. destined to hold that world cup in my scrawny arms.

It comes to me naturally you know? It's a different thing that most people don't have in their blood, in their body, just a dirty, rotten, tough, cowboy.

Out here riding down the pasture with Spirit, my horse, and my Little brother Toby on his stallion. galloping through the wind chasing down a steer.

Being a cowboy is a lifestyle. That's what i was raised to be, I didn't much want to do anything else. i rode bucking horses, i roped caffs.
Now not every bull rider does this. a lot of the guys don't even know how to ride a horse or don't want to ride a horse.

I'd rather be a cowboy than just a bull rider any day.

"could've picked a slower one tubs." I laugh to myself.

"These wild baby's are better." my brother exclaimed as he undid our ropes from the steers legs and hopped on the fella, whooping and hollerin as the little guy ran around the field.

Being a cowboy and not strictly a bull rider helps me, i mean im not just riding a horse. I'm working on my legs, my balance and things like that.

Bull riding sport definitely started out as a wild a reckless event, the balance has shifted to where there's the wild and reckless cowboys, that are willing to do whatever it takes. And there's the athlete side of things where us guys have really evolved into training hard and spending every minute of everyday working towards being a world champion bull rider.

I'd call myself one of the stranger guys as far as what works for me as a bull rider, i don't work out as much as my competitors do, i'm more on the scrawny side. My trick is balance, balance for me is a big part of hanging on to those beasts out in the arena. doesn't matter how big you are, it's not gonna help muscle a damm eighteen hundred pound bull.

I have a ball in our barn i stand on all day everyday most of the time. standing on it as it rolls and the way I have to move my weight is just like a bull. It's been working for me, i feel like it's the main reason i move my hips so good while riding. i do it for an hour a day, for a long time growing up. If i didn't have anything to do that day id be on that ball practicing my balance. I could be watching bull riding tapes, eating a sandwich, or someone could walk in like Nick does a lot and start talking to me, but i'd never get off the ball. People tell me im a natural. But they're not here, they don't see what i do out here, but hey, i let them say what they want.
