In the late afternoon, four good friends were walking around the empty streets, playing loud music on speakers and singing along. Their practice ended perfectly so they decided to have some fun while all the other people were busy with their jobs, leaving the outside only for them.
“I feel like a teenager again,” Minho said, “Those times when I was out with friends and having fun till it got late.”
“Me too,” Jisung agreed. He was walking beside him, swinging their intertwined hands back and forth.
Chan was dragging the large speaker on tiny wheels and Jeongin jumped around, circling each one of them multiple times. His energy seemed to be never ending.
A love song started playing and that got a reaction from two lovers. “That’s our song, Channie!” Jeongin cheered and started singing the lyrics he knew by heart. His boyfriend looked at him with a heartwarming smile and joined in.
Minho couldn’t help himself and sang along with them, purposely singing their favorite lines louder to annoy them. Chan pushed him away playfully and Jisung’s ears were filled with Minho’s laughter.
The three boys kept playing around and singing with wide smiles and Jisung just observed. He didn’t feel like playing, instead he wanted to think. Think about what he did to deserve all of this happiness. How could they be this perfect? He was deeply grateful to have them.
In these few months he not only got his passion back but he also got a chance to get his friends back and even find love. That was a gift he will cherish till his last breath.
To Jisung this exact day felt like an ending of a big chapter and a beginning to a new one. A brighter one. Jisung imagined it to start with the description of the view just like the one he was seeing right now. Warm orange sun shining on the buildings high up. It looked like if he climbed up on the roof, he could taste the warmth himself.
Shades of green, red, blue and yellow plants hung on people’s balconies, making the street they were walking on look alive, old and new at the same time. Jisung could imagine those colors following him on his days, keeping a smile on his face.
Maybe this is happiness?
But happiness isn’t so easy to catch, nor is it easy to keep if you finally have it. Happiness makes you fight for it and is unfair to some people who have to fight twice as hard to keep it. No matter what they’ve gone through already.
Loud music from their speakers and singing blurred out the sounds around them. They laughed and played around, continuing to walk in the middle of the street. Jisung walked a little bit behind them.
If only he had been close enough, if only he had known what was about to happen, would it have changed anything?
The sight of a car driving at one of them at fast speed made Jisung turn pale. Everything seemed to slow down around him. He pushed his legs to move and ran with full strength towards his love.
“Minho, watch out!!!”
Jisung shoved him out of the way, onto the pavement, hearing him hiss in pain. And before Jisung could get out of the road, the car’s lights shone into his eyes, blinding him with white until it turned black as immense pain filled his body and mind.
He felt himself crash onto the ground with a heavy hit to his head. His consciousness left and came and left again and in between those seconds he was awake, he could hear tire screeches, panicked shouts and cries. Until he fell into unconsciousness completely.
“Minho, leave the driver for later! Pick Jisung up. I’m calling the ambulance!” Chan yelled out orders in panic, feeling his heartbeat run way too fast for it to be normal. Jeongin started crying and couldn’t stop himself while Minho kneeled near the unconscious boy with pure shock evident on him.
