Tanner sat at a small table beside the kitchen door in his best friend's cafe sipping ice tea and playing on his phone while he waited for the next order which would need to be delivered. He had been helping out for a few day's because Jack's wife Shana had gone to care for her sick mother.
After a while and a lot of cursing Jack came out of the kitchen carrying the order and slipped it into the insulated bag that was on the seat opposite Tanner before handing him a slip of paper with the address written on it.
"there you go bro' I really appreciate this, I wouldn't have been able to manage without your help" Jack said looking at Tanner.
"no worries but don't forget I start at KJ Security next week, of course I'll try and help whenever I can but I can't promise, I'll know more next week after seeing my old boss" Tanner said.
"right, that guy called Chit, you told me about him, he's dating that famous model isn't he?" Jack said smiling.
"toonie' yeah, the kid still looked immaculate when he was butt deep in mud, it didn't matter what he did he always looked like he was doing a fucking photo shoot for vogue or something, it's no wonder Chit fell for him" Tanner laughed
"anyway don't worry about it, we'll just play it by ear and to be honest I can't expect you to work a full time job then come here to deliver for me, you'll need to get some rest" Jack said.
"let's just see how it goes, yeah? Tanner replied.
"yeah oh and before I forget, we've run out of your soup, the customers really love it bro" Jack said.
"ok, I'll cook up a fresh batch tomorrow and drop it off as soon as it's ready" it was his family's secret recipe that he'd cooked many times over the years.
"thanks bro' I don't know why you don't open your own restaurant, you're a great cook" Jack said.
"it would drive me crazy being stuck in a kitchen all day, I'll leave that to you and Shana plus I wouldn't want to put you out of business" Tanner laughed.
"cocky bastard, alright so the customer has already paid online, I've delivered to him before so you shouldn't have any problems" Jack said.
Jack was normally the one who delivered when his wife was home and he used a scooter because it was easier to access the narrow streets so Tanner had decided to do the same.
"I'm off then, I'll be back in thirty minutes" Tanner said grabbing Jacks helmet and the bag of food.
"be careful bro, it gets a bit crazy out there at this time of night" Jack called out.
Tanner raised his hand in acknowledgement waving the helmet as he did so before heading out of the door and leaving the air conditioned atmosphere behind, it was like walking into an oven just walking outside.
He wore jeans and a white tee shirt with a caramel colored cardigan and he had a few buttons fastened so it wouldn't flap about while he rode the scooter. It was in stark contrast to the outfit he would be wearing on Monday, he just hoped the weather had cooled down before then.
It took about ten minutes to reach the address then after finding somewhere to park, he climbed off the scooter, removed the helmet and left it on the seat then grabbed the bag before heading across to the building. Climbing the steps he walked into the air conditioned lobby then sighed while enjoying the brief respite from the heat as he headed across to the elevator.
He walked inside, pressed the button for the floor that he wanted then waited as the doors slid shut. It didn't look like the kind of place where the residents would call for take out, on the contrary he would expect them to have live-in chefs or house keepers.
