"So this is what you brought as an apology .. y/n?" Neuvillette sat by his desk, eyeing the basket that y/n has just placed in it. Y/n nodded with a proud grin on their face.

"Please open it!" They eagerly pushed the basket closer to Neuvillette.

He sighed and reluctantly opened the basket. Him and y/n weren't on the exact best terms, if anything y/n got along better with Wriothesley than Neuvillette. But they've been released from prison and own a small bakery, living a peaceful and quiet life now.

Hence the basket.

They brought some stuff they baked specially for Neuvillette.

"I appreciate the gesture, however I must get back to work." He picked up the basket and placed it by his side "I'll have some.. later. For now I need to re do the 300 pages of paper work you destroyed"

"It was an acci-"

"I know I know" his lips curled up slightly "Just teasing"

"Oh! Since when does monsieur Neuvillette tease?" Y/n pulled a chair and sat in front of the busy man "Let me help"

He raised an eyebrow "Thank you but, no thank you."

"You being here is quite distracting" he mumbled, his volume so low it was nearly impossible to hear him. Nearly.

But y/n heard it.

"Would you elaborate on that?" They got up and walked next to him,  Neuvillette put his pen down and analysed the figure of the person who stood in front of him.

Y/n towered over him just barely, and only because Neuvillette was sat down and they were standing up.

He unconsciously bit his lip.

Neuvillette had always had many thoughts and opinions about Y/n: annoying, interesting, childish, immature and the list goes on. However, a new thought entered his head recently.

He started to see Y/n as cute. It started few days ago when Y/n had come everyday to apologise. At first he found it cute, the effort they put in and all. But now it was both cute yet annoying. Although he got a lot of nice free food so he didn't complain much, and it always tasted good.

"Monsier Neuvillette you bit your lip" he quickly looked away back at his work, slightly embarrassed by y/n's observation "Don't be shy. I know you think I'm cute"

"I also find fish cute. Don't make it a big deal y/n." He got back to work but Y/n would simply not leave.
"Must I call the gardes?"

"Why would you do that when I'm stronger than any of them? You should take me out yourself instead" they placed an hand on Neuvillette's shoulder, smugly smiling down at the man.

He pushed his chair back and tapped his lap "Sit here and stay quiet for the next hour." Y/n was in shock at his demand. Not that they minded but it wasn't expected from him.

But what y/n was not aware of, was how observant Neuvillette was.

Over the past couple of days. He noticed that y/n had constantly lacked love and attention in their life. Affection was rare to come by for them, hence why Neuvillette was more patient with them than anybody else. He understood them, and he knows that loneliness is a painful thing to feel.

He noticed that he quickly became someone Y/n was comfortable with, someone they loved to be around.

Sure they visited Wriothesley twice a month but what about those other lonely days? Y/n did spend some days alone, but they didn't have many friends other than Chevreuse , who is most always busy.

Neuvillette knew.

And he didn't mind being there for them.

"Let's just stay like this for a while okay? I know you can get lonely so get comfortable and stay here as long as you like" He smiled softly at Y/n. They felt like they were about to tear up, no one had shown them this much empathy before.

"I'm grateful" y/n smiled softly and comfortably sat sideways on his lap, their head and hand placed on his chest while the other hand wrapped softly by his waist. "Thank you so much"

He smiled to himself and kissed Y/n's forehead "Always here for you"

He got back to work, not long later, Y/n fell asleep. He guessed that would happen, they must have been so tired baking all of that for him.

Gently picking them up, he placed y/n on the sofa and covered them with a blanket. He had to go deliver his papers and do some check ups. But he didn't wish for y/n to wake up alone to this empty room and worried.

So he left some tea and some of their own bakeries by the table where y/n would see it first, with a small note attached to it:

I've gone to deal with some business Y/n, dont worry, I'll be back shortly, so for now just drink the tea and enjoy the cake you made (be careful the tea is very very hot). Bring a blanket next time you visit , you are free to relax here when you are lonely and need company. Don't worry, you are not a bother, I will never turn my back on you.
