You go to the cinema and notice the row you're sat at is nearly empty. The only person there other than you is the blonde girl who seems — terrified.

cw: horror movie playing

˖ •*

Nice! I landed a nearly empty row for this brand new movie. It's rumoured to be super scary and that's why nobody came to see it this late on a Friday 13th.

But I think that's the thrill.

I have my snacks and drink ready and thankfully there's no one sat next to me who might spill their food when jumping in fear.

My bliss of having an empty row however, is shattered when a girl walks by and takes a seat right next to me.

"Hey" she smiles and sat to my left. She had glossy lips, great sense of style and beautiful long blonde hair , which she tied it into a high ponytail.

She wore a slightly oversized off the shoulder white sweater with a ribbon on it and a plaid skirt. She had high knee socks and wore a shiny pair of Mary Jane's. And to top it off, her hair tie also had a ribbon on it.

As someone who has seen plenty horror movies at the cinema , never have I encountered a girl like her.

"Hey" I replied back and shifted around my seat trying to get comfortable again.

"Sorry you were probably hoping for an empty row but the ticket person gave me this seat so..." she looked a little guilty and I instantly felt bad, realising how dry my response was and I didn't smile at her back.

I shake my head "no worries , I hope you enjoy the movie..."

"Navia"

"Navia" I repeat and smile at her this time .

The adverts play and she strikes a conversation with me again "Do you watch horror a lot?"

"Yep" I open my drink as i speak "I kinda grew up with them so it would feel wrong to not see as many as possible. Though I sorta prefer older horror than the new ones and — sorry I'm rambling. What about you though?"

She smiles gently at me and stabs the straw onto her drink "Don't worry about rambling, I love listening to people talk about their interests" she sipped her drink and looked my way again "This is my first time watching a horror movie — you see I lost a bet against my friend.. Oh and speaking of that! Could you take a quick picture of me ? I need it for proof to my friend that I actually went inside the room not just bought the tickets and left"

I nod and take her phone , waiting for the perfect moment, an advert that was bright so her face could be seen in the photo

"Smile" i said , but she was already smiling.

30 minutes into the movie

The first scare came abruptly, a jump-scare punctuated by a sharp, jarring sound. I heard Navia gasp beside me, her body tensing. I turned slightly to look at her, concern creeping in.

"Are you okay?" I whispered, leaning closer so she could hear me without disturbing the other viewers.

"Yeah, I'm fine," she replied quickly, her eyes glued to the screen. "Just... wasn't expecting that."

But as the movie went on, I could see she wasn't fine. She flinched at every sudden noise, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the armrest. When a particularly gruesome scene played out on screen, she let out a soft whimper, and before I knew it, she reached for my hand.

I didn't think twice. I wrapped my fingers around hers, giving her hand a reassuring squeeze. "Hey," I whispered, my voice as calm as I could make it, "it's just a movie. I'm right here."

She nodded, though her grip on my hand only tightened. She leaned into me slightly, her shoulder brushing against mine. Instinctively, I shifted closer, draping my arm around her shoulders to offer more comfort. I could feel the tension in her body, the way she was trying to keep it together despite her fear.

"Thanks," she whispered, her voice so quiet I almost didn't hear it.

I just nodded, holding her close. "Anytime," I whispered back.

As the movie dragged on, I noticed Navia's breathing started to calm. Her body, once rigid with fear, slowly began to relax against mine. I focused on being a steady presence beside her, hoping it would make the experience a little easier for her.

The movie was intense, but with Navia beside me, her warmth against my side, I found myself less absorbed in the scares on screen and more focused on making sure she was okay. When the credits finally rolled, the lights slowly coming up in the theater, I gently loosened my arm from around her. She sat up, looking a little bit flustered.

But if anything, she looked relieved that the movie was over.

"That wasn't so bad," she said with a small, sheepish smile.

I couldn't help but chuckle. "Yeah, you handled it well."

She grinned, her earlier fear fading away. "Well... I had a little help," she admitted, giving my hand a final squeeze before letting go.

As we stood to leave, I glanced at her, feeling a warmth in my chest. "I'm glad I could be here for you."

Navia looked up at me, her eyes soft. "Me too," she said quietly.

We walked out of the theater together, side by side, and I felt a deep sense of connection. The movie might have been scary, but in that moment, all that mattered was that I was there for her when she needed it.

In the end, she gave me her number and suggested we watch a movie sometime again.

I grinned and agreed with her plan. Today i made a new film buddy and a new friend.
