Your 23 Finnick's 24
——Night Before the Quarter Quell——Pulling the door open to the rooftop you paused when you saw someone else sitting in your normal spot. It was Finnick Odair, the male tribute from your district, your former mentor. You tried to leave without making a sound but when you tried to close the door it squeaked.
You cursed the stupid door for existing when he whipped his head around and saw you. "I'm sorry, I didn't know anyone else knew about up here, I can just leave if you'd like me too." You mumble an excuse.
"No, it's—okay—stay." He said welcoming you with his hand to sit next to him. You smile and close the door the rest of the way before walking over to him. He scooted over and you sat down pulling your knees to your chest.
You stared out at the vibrant lights and landscape of the Capitol. Down on the street the Capitol citizens were partying away, counting down the hours until your possible doom. But from all the way up here, if you truly didn't think about the reason for celebration and all the festive lights and colors, it seemed almost fun.
"You know as much as I hate the Capitol, I won't lie that they still have a great view." You comment leaning your head on your hands as you stared out at all the shimmering lights.
Finnick looked over at you and smiled, "I can see what you mean." He said subconsciously moving closer to you when he looked away.
"I don't wanna go in tomorrow." You confide in him, you didn't know why you had. You had agreed to be allies in the arena but other than that, you hadn't talked to him very much. You had only known of the rebellion from what Haymitch had told you, not from Finnick.
He wasn't your friend by any means, hell he practically seemed to avoid you when he could, but there was just something about him that you seemed to trust, despite it. He had been your mentor for your games and you had had a good bond then, but after you came back he had grown distant from you and you never found out why."Me neither." He admits as well and you look over only now realizing how truly close to you he had become. His face was only maybe a foot away from your own. His eyes looked at you glancing down at your lips and you in turn did the same to his.
But you immediately looked away and shook your head. You couldn't get distracted by him like this, you knew that. You were allies that's it, he had been your mentor once upon a time. But he hadn't sought you out after winning your games, so why would he try getting on your good side now?
"(y/n)?" Finnick interrupted your thoughts placing a hand on your own. You immediately recoiled from his touch as if you'd been burned.
"Don't start something you're gonna regret, Finnick." You warn him. His eyes go confused for a moment before he answers.
He shook his head, "I've waited maybe 8 years to tell you this; trusty me darlin' if there's one thing I'm not gonna regret it's this." He says.
You look up confused, "what are you—" you begin to say before you feel his face grow increasingly closer to yours.
"(y/n) I 've loved you from the moment I met you on the train. I was just scared that you'd die in that arena and it would be my fault, because I didn't train you good enough.—But when you won—I thought I could finally be together with you,—but then President Snow had other plans for me." Finnick trailed off for a moment as if choosing his words rather carefully. He leaned his forehead against yours, "he threatened to sell you if I ever told you how I felt; so I lied and kept my distance just so I wouldn't be tempted to." He explained and your eyes widened. He didn't keep his distance because he didn't like you, he had kept his distance because he did.
You licked your lips as you absorbed what he had said and Finnick glanced down at them. "You love me?" You asked looking into his eyes.
He smiled that heart-stopping smile and nodded, "yeah, I really do." He said before leaning in and you're taken by surprise but welcome his lips anyway.
His mouth was skilled and you sadly now knew why. Even when you didn't know it he'd been protecting you all this time. He'd been protecting you from the same fate that had been inflicted upon him all those years ago, because he loved you!
You didn't think this is what would happen when you came up to the rooftop tonight, but a brush of his lips on yours made you so glad that you had. You didn't know what tomorrow would bring you, but you at least knew that you wouldn't be going it alone.
You wanted to spend the rest of your time on this earth wrapped in Finnick's arms. With the uncertainty of the future and of the rebellion on the horizon, you just hoped you lived long enough to do just that.
