Chapter Seventeen

Crystal

"How's he been doing?" I ask Novi looking at Morris from across the hallway.

"Good. He's staying out the way." She said shrugging. "Do you really think him and Devale are gonna be able to operate on a patient together without killing them?" She asked.

I sigh deeply as she asked her question. "Novi I trust that two of my best surgeons will be able to save lives. Whether they're friends or not." I tell her.

"Zena is really upset you didn't consider her for the head nurse position-"

"She also doesn't know I did consider her but she's unreliable Novi. She has to get her mental health together before I can put her in a position of power." I say softly.

"Crystal not everyone can bounce back after losing a bab—" she closed her mouth and looked away never finishing her sentence.

She tried to move away but I grabbed her arm making her smack her lips.

"Crystal please.." she said.

"No tell me what's going. I've been kept in the dark about enough stuff."

"Girl Zena and DeVale's relationship ain't got nothing but to do with me or you. We both need to stay out of it." Novi said.

"So they got a baby together?" I ask squinting.

Novi shook her head. "That's not what I said." She replied.

"And I think what you said was that she'd lost a baby before. It was either Morris or Devale. It's that simple." I say.

"Why do you care? The baby is gone. You should be happy."

"That's what you think of me? That I would be happy another woman lost a baby?" I ask becoming offended. "Damn that's not who I am." I tell Novi.

She rolled her eyes, "I know that girl. I'm just saying her not having a baby with Devale works in your favor." She says shrugging.

If Zena and Devale had a baby I still don't think they'd be together. The only time he deals with her is if he doesn't have me or anyone else worth giving his time to. I never believed him when he said he was taking her serious.

"I am so happy to be here." I hear behind me making me stop thinking.

I turn around to see Rochelle standing there with a smile on her face.

"Hey Rochelle. This is Novi, Novi this is Rochelle the new head nurse."

"It's nice to meet you." Rochelle said holding her hand out.

Novi hesitated before taking the gesture with grace. "Nice to meet you." She said. "Crystal I'll get back to you later." She said before walking away.

"I want to thank you for bringing me on board." Rochelle said taking me by the arm.

I chuckled and tapped her hand, "It's no problem you were one of the best doctors in LA. I had to bring you in." I tell her. "Is anyone giving you trouble?" I ask her.

"No everyone is so nice, I was even thinking about going out with everyone after shift." She said shrugging.

"That's good..." I drifted off into a bubble of confusion.

They were just complaining about inviting a new head nurse in and now they're inviting to an after shift outing. I don't trust it, especially Zena. She's sneaky.

"I'm glad you feel at home—" my words were cut off by the sound heavy thunder.

I looked out the nearest window and saw it pouring raining outside. Then I tapped my apple watch for the time. I have to go get DJ in a little bit.
