Chapter Thirty-Nine

Crystal

"Happy Birthday Novi!" I said sneaking up behind my friend with a hug.

She turned around kissed my cheek.

"Thank you!" She said giving me a hug.

"Why are you here?" I ask looking around the hospital.

She shrugged. "Because I got the whole weekend to party." She said. "I thought you were off?" She asked me.

"I am but I came to say happy birthday and also grab something from Devale." I told her. "Where is he?"

Novi shrugged her shoulders and walked to a computer. "I think I read something about a heart transplant. He might be taking that." She said.

"Okay great so I'm gonna leave and come back." I said making Novi laugh. "Just tell him to call me when he's done." I told her.

"Alright, well we're getting drinks when we're done with our shift. You should tag along." Novi said. "Unless you're still in mommy mode." She joked.

I roll my eyes. "I'm just trying to make sure they don't run away again." I said making Novi laugh. "Both sets of grandparents are in town so I am free to come and hang out. I can't drink but I can eat chicken wings." I said to her.

"You know I keep forgetting you're pregnant." Novi said shaking her head.

"Me too, I don't even have a bump for real." I said looking down at my stomach.

"Maybe this time it's a girl." Novi said dancing a little bit.

"And just one baby." I said making her nudge me.

Zena was walking up to the front desk and I mentally prepared myself just to look at her face. I don't have a problem with her, I just don't  like her. She's done so much damage in my life that I don't think I could say something nice to her and it'd be genuine. That is something I blame Devale for because Zena and I did have a good friendship. Sometimes I miss it, just a little bit. Like a little little bit.

"Good morning," Novi said to Zena.

"Good morning. Hi Crystal. What are you doing here?" Asked me.

"I'm about to leave don't worry." I said putting my hands up.

Zena shook her head. "You're not bothering me." She said sitting down at the computer.

"Alright I'm being paged." Novi said.

"No you're not." I said as she walked away.

I looked at Zena and noticed that her belly was growing. I was getting a little jealous. I want a belly, well a bigger one.

"Crystal can I ask you something?" Zena said just as I was about to walk away.

"What's up?"

"How do you do it?" She asked making me squint.

"Do what?" I ask confused at her question.

"You work long ass shifts, go home to take care of three kids, and then end the night by having sex with your husband. That's exhausting. I don't think I can do this!" She said sounding stressed.

"Okay well first of all, you don't have 3 kids, so don't worry about that. Also, I don't have sex with Devale every night. We don't even see each other every night." I say shrugging my shoulders. "It's a part of the job."

Zena sighed. "Mm tell me about it." She said. "We spent our first night apart as a married couple. I cried." She whispered to me.

"Oh so you're like really married and in love?" I ask gaining a glare from Zena. "I'm joking." I said putting my hands up.
