Chapter 10

Sun and Rainbows

This Chapter dedicated to Sherri Couthen, my dear friend from the past.

Three days, it had been since Troianne had arrived in 1863 England. Since having Diana her days were filled with getting to know her precious little daughter and some of the staff at Cusworth Hall. The Butler had brought down a beautiful cradle for Diana, it had once belonged to the Earl. It had been housed in the attic for the past Thirty three years. It was a wonderful creation of light oak wood, its rocking mechanism was a smooth gentle motion when pushed. When Whiley had presented it to Troianne she had exclaimed how useful it would be in putting Diana to sleep.

The Duchess Daria brought baby clothes from trunks that were stored in the attic also, Renatta brought dresses for Troianne to wear and the cook was quick to prepare foods that would enable Troianne to keep up her energy. Diana was a day sleeper and a night creeper. She had her days and nights mixed up, her mother was having a hard time adjusting the infants schedule.

It was April 3rd, Troianne's 22nd birthday today and she decided to treat herself to a walk through the gardens with Diana in tow. Troianne had found in the diaper bag that she had brought with her, a baby sling that she had purchased back in Kentucky. It would be very useful on a walk. She wrapped the child against her chest and went down the steps to the foyer. Daria was just going up and found Troianne looking around wondering where the back of the house actually was. This was Troianne's first attempt at leaving the house for some fresh air and she had no idea where she was going.

The Duchess was coming around the corner just as Troianne sought a way out of the house.

"Good Morning Miss Shelden, can I help you with something? You look lost."

"Yes, Duchess, could you please direct me to the gardens footpaths?"

"I find that I need some fresh air and sunshine,"

"Yes, my dear just go down this hallway to the left, you will come to the solarium, exit through there to the pathway into the gardens."

"Thank you Duchess, also could you tell me have you seen the earl this morning?"

"Yes, dear he just arrived home from a long night with a sick tenant." "It seems that there is some sort of lung ailment making its way through the village and Duncan has been very busy doctoring many of the sick."

"Oh dear, I hope that the warmer weather will help make things better for his patients." "If you should see him again, could you please tell him I wish to speak with him?"

"Yes dear, I most certainly will."

"I am off to write correspondence to some old friends." If you would like I can arrange for a tea time in about an hour on the east lawn."

"Oh that would be wonderful your grace. Thank you."

"It is not problem at all, I want your stay with us to be comfortable and enjoyable."

"Have a wonderful afternoon Miss Shelden." The Duchess heads up the stairs with a swish of her long skirt.

Troianne heads the way the Duchess had directed her and exits out the solarium doors.

"What an utterly spectacular place this is." Paths leading in all directions, rose bushes as tall as her 5'2", trees of all kinds, plants and fountains dot the crossways of the paths that wound past statuary of Greek mythology, up the path a ways is a Folly covered in thick Ivy, just begging to be used for a romantic interlude.
