Chapter 18
Chaos
The next day as promised Monsieur Garvey showed up at Cusworth Hall. Whiley the butler greeted him at the door and led him to the Dukes Laboratory. No one was ever allowed in the Laboratory unless specifically invited. As much as it pained him to let Monsieur Garvey into his private sanctuary he reluctantly invited him in. If Monsieur Garvey truly is a physician then Duncan was most interested to learn what the monsieur thought on new exploration in to disease control and anesthesia techniques.
As soon as Monsieur Garvey arrived and Duncan had shown him around the laboratory, Duncan had a very strange feeling about this man. For one he didn't for one second believe monsieur was a physician and furthermore the man kept insisting on seeing Troianne and the new baby.
"Come on Garvey what game do you play? Surely, you see that I am not falling for your claim of being a physician. What do you want?"
"Duke Whitby, I do not lie when I tell you that I am a man of medicine. My practices are considered somewhat ethically challenged, I assure you I am highly interested in this new anesthesia technique."
Somehow Duncan doubted every word the man uttered. He directed monsieur to his work table, there sat his bottles of newly discovered Chloroform, Morphine and Hydro-chloride.
"Although these medicines are used to help a person sleep for medical procedures they could not possibly endure being awake. They also provide pain relief if given in small amounts to patients who experience episodes of Migrims (migraines), men who have injured themselves, have been shot, or a woman with a severely painful monthly cycle for example. Some physicians are giving it to toddlers when they become unruly or overactive. I for one do not believe in such practices. Children are meant to run around and be rambunctious do you not think Monsieur Garvey?"
"I wholeheartedly agree Duke, children need to play and learn in order to become happy healthy adults." Saying this all with a wicked grin, he remembers his childhood, full of pain and misery, never playing or enjoying life, His was a miserable existence, begging and stealing for every scrap of food. His witch of a mother always leaving him home alone to seek the company of other men and a father that beat him senseless every night of his young life. He had found favor with a older gentleman when he was 16 years old. That gentleman was no gentle-man at all, he may have been rich, dressed Henry in finery, fed him anything his stomach desired and let him live in the lap of luxury, but the man's taste for young boys was more than just friendship it was sexual and Henry was abused by the man until his 23rd birthday at which time he killed the man with his bare hands for using the young Henry's body so brutally that Henry could no longer stand it and fled to Versailles where he discovered his soul was no longer his own and that he needed others souls to feed off of. Doing so that he may live. Once in Versailles he met up with a group of Warlocks that knew of his birth and what he truly was. Come to find out, his mother was actually a bonafide, dyed in black, broom carrying, WITCH and that is how he learned to control others souls to keep himself alive.
The Duke showed him the proper way to mix the ingredients to create the desired degrees of effectiveness. Monsieur Garvey kept these mixtures solidly in his memory. If he were going to take the baby from under their noses, he was going to need to have these chemicals at his ready in case the baby decided to cry or someone in the household became too hard to handle. While Duncan had his back turned. Monsieur Garvey pocketed a small bottle of Chloroform and a vile of the Morphine. He didn't think the duke would miss them since it seemed he had a stockpile of the medicines along with other elixirs and tonics on a shelf that sat on the far end of the work table.
