Chapter 12
Dinner Surprises Abound
A beautiful sunny day led to a light rain in the evening. Troianne was in her room awaiting Renatta to come and help her with her bath and to style her hair for the dinner party.
Earlier Duncan had told Troianne that Diana would be cared for by a local tenants wife whom he trusted completely. The tenant had been one of his patients that could not pay for his medical services. Therefore, Duncan had asked Marta the farmers wife if in repayment for services rendered, she could care for the infant overnight so that Troianne would be free to enjoy the evening and meet the very special guests who would arrive later.
Duncan knew that tonight may be quite a shock to Troianne and wanted to make sure that she would not be overly stressed, he wanted everything to be perfect for her, his angel.
Troianne, was nervous about meeting new people tonight. She had always been somewhat of a loner and never went out of her way to make friends easily. In 1863 it was a very social time in the world. There were no TV's or Computers for entertainment. People made their own entertainment. Dinner parties were the norm here on the weekends.
After her bath, she sat and pondered how she would like Renatta to do her hair. Should she wear it up in an elaborate style or should she just wear it down with some kind of adornment.
That decision was made for her quickly when Renatta arrived with a small box in her hand.
"Miss, the Duchess wishes you to wear this in your hair tonight."
Looking at the little box, she asks Renatta, "What is it?"
"Open it and see Renatta said with a big grin on her face."
Renatta really was quite a cute little pixie with her red hair and shining green eyes, she couldn't have been more than five feet if that. Small in build with rosy cheeks, she was always there to help and encourage.
As Troianne opened the box she could not help but let out a squeal of delight. Inside the box was an astonishing hair piece. It was more of a clip, set in gold was a large blood red ruby surrounded by small diamonds in an oval pattern, beyond the pattern of intricate lacy gold was a black enamel underlay. A most exquisite piece.
"Oh my, this will look splendid with my dress." "How should we use it Renatta?"
"Miss I think I shall put it in front above your forehead and have your hair piled high, leaving the back down. We will let some curls hang down in front of your ears. It will give a most regal look."
"That sounds interesting, let's get started shall we."
While Renatta was working on her hair, Troianne painted her fingernails a dark red to match her dress. She had remembered that in her purse she had brought with her from the future she had two bottles of nail polish, one was pink and the other red. She had always carried nail polish in her purse for little touch ups, in this case she was so glad she had that habit. She also had her makeup bag with her and decided to put it on tonight to make her complexion look healthier. Renatta marveled at the makeup in the bag and the nail polish. Troianne told her that if she ever wanted to borrow them that she was more than welcome to do so. Renatta was more than pleased to be given that opportunity.
As Renatta was finishing up Troiannes hair, she was handed a small mirror by the maid.
"All finished, miss, would you care to take a look?"
"Oh my, Renatta it is spectacular. You truly have a gift for styling hair. In the future your talents would earn you a salon of your own!"
"A Salon miss?"
