My eyes must adjust to the bright light after days of darkness. After a couple of seconds I can finally see what has become of this city. Houses are completely burned, bodies lying everywhere, but no sign of life. Where are the creatures?
"I don't see any zombies..." Jay said. Zombies.. That is the name we gave them while we were stuck in the house. "Maybe they're gone?" Jen replied. I've never heard her talk this much on one day! "I don't think so.. We can make use of it, but we have to be carefull." Aiden acts like a leader. He has blond hair and a sweet attitude. His gymnastic clothes are a dark green shirt and black capri pants. He really seems like some kind of a military. We're all wearing dark clothes. Some of us just already wore that and the others took some from my wardrobes. We're all using belts around our upper bodies to carry our knives.
Aiden starts walking, followed by the rest of our group. We are very wary of the zombies, which can just come at any minute. "Where are we going to go anyway?" Sarah said. Her eyes are still tearful, it seems like she just can't stop crying. "We can go to the supermarket. There will be a lot of food supplies, enough to survive for weeks." Laura is smart. There's a supermarket near my house, only 5 to 10 minutes away. "Shall we run?" Ryan asks. "No, we should not draw too much attention." I reply.
In the distance I hear growling noises. "Stop.." I whisper. There's so much silence that the group is able to hear me, despite my soft voice. "W-what's wrong?" Sarah's voice sounds like she's going to cry at any second. "It sounds like there are zombies in there." I point to a small alley away, and the eyes of my classmates follow my finger. "Are you sure? Because I don't hear anything.." Jay looks at me with a questioning look. I nod and walk backwards. But something is blocking my way that lets me stand right. A soft, warm wall that is taller than me, breathing on the back of my head. I turn immediately and shrink back. A long figure of a man covered in blood is breathing heavily towards us. "H-help me" His voice sounds like he has just been pierced by a bullet and is about to die. Suddenly Sarah starts to scream, causing the zombies in the alley to come out. Great, she's going to be our death!
The group starts running as fast as possible, but the zombies seem to have more speed and they're beginning to catch up. If we keep running we'll be catched and killed. "Follow me!" Ryans' voice sounds confident. We run into a small shed with a flat roof and start climbing. I hope the zombies can't climb.. We help the last person, Jen, up the roof. We begin to breathe out and think we are safe, but the zombies are, despite their many injuries, quicker than we think. They run up against the wall of the shed, and begin to climb it. "We cannot move! We're stuck here!" Emma screams, while Ryan, Aiden and Jay start to kick the zombies to keep them of the roof.
Suddenly Aiden stops. "There are no zombies at that side of the shed, but if we run now, they will catch us. Unless..." Jay looks at Aiden. "W-what are you trying to say?" They've been best friends since they were 3 years old. "I-I distract them, and you run. Promise me you're going, and do not look back. Jay... Know that I love you, I do this for you." And that were Aidens' last words. He pushes himself off the roof and lands right in the arms of the hungry zombies on the ground. "No!" Tears appear in the eyes of Jay. He wants to jump after Aiden, but is stopped by Laura and me. "No!" he repeats. "We have to run, now!" Emma says, and we jump of the safe side of roof.
Behind us we hear the painful cries of Aiden, but we know we can't do anything to save him.
"Aiden!" Jay shouts, still struggling to go back.Aiden sacrificed his life for us, and we are now with 7 left...
