Elle POV

After our Monday night party, Noah was quickly immersed in my reality of life as a doctor. Our evening last night was awesome! Noah's idea of taking a journey on the path of memories allowed us to have deep discussions about the difficulties we experienced that led us to the breakup. It's compelling to come back to these issues and I wasn't convinced that Noah would be open to revisiting all of these things. However, I believe that he has realised that having these discussions quickly helps to avoid future disputes.

Since yesterday Noah came to a 5-7 with my colleagues, he had planned a party today with his former Harvard colleagues who moved to LA in order to introduce me to them.

I was getting ready for my workday in the employee locker room when Dr. Michelle Taylor walked in.
- So, the rest of your evening with your date went well! " She asked me with a big smile.
- Yes, it went well!" I laughed.
- You should have seen the head of the group of nurses who were finishing their shift looking at your guy. " She said to dramatic effect.

I couldn't help but burst out laughing. This group of nurses tends to get restless as soon as there is a new male intern or resident.
- It's kind of weird to get back together with your ex," I confided to Michelle. " Everything is new but at the same time old. I remember the group of cheerleaders who surrounded Noah when we were in high school.
- Don't tell me he was quarterback.
- Yes, in high school and college.
- But, this guy is perfect! What's holding you back, Elle?

I sighed before telling her:
- I believe that after the breakup, I built a wall around my heart so that I wouldn't feel abandoned again. He told me a few days before we broke up that he was going to fight for me and finally a few days later he told me that loving me wasn't enough.
- But, did you consider that breaking up with you was actually a way for him to fight for you? You said it yourself that if you had stayed together, you wouldn't be a doctor. And I would have been completely confused not to have my partner with me today.

I smiled at Michelle before I picked up my stethoscope and followed her into the emergency room. It's been a crazy day! We have had several road accidents due to a sudden downpour that made the roads slippery in a very short time. A few minutes before the end of my shift, we received a call warning us that 3 ambulances were coming because of an accident on the road between Malibu and Los Angeles. Dr. Smith warned me that I was going to be held back at work. I was disappointed but also stressed about letting Noah down tonight. I quickly went into the locker room to text Noah to tell him that I won't be able to reach him in the end. He had already left me a message telling me that he had gone for a motorcycle ride around Malibu and that he would pick me up from the hospital. I was hoping he would see my message before he made the trip to pick me up.

I was on the ambulance drop-off area with Grant staying under the roof to avoid getting wet from the downpour. The first ambulance stopped and the doors slammed open as the paramedic took out the stretcher and said:
- 25-year-old man, victim of a motorcycle accident. Open fracture of the left leg. Glasgow at 10 on the scene of the accident...

I have not been able to hear the rest of the paramedic' s explanations. I closed my eyes for I don't know how long trying to prepare myself for what I'm going to see the minute I'm going to open them. What is the percentage chance that there was more than one 25-year-old man on a motorcycle on the road between Malibu and Los Angeles? An open fracture means a higher risk of amputation. Glasgow at 10 means a risk of brain damage. At that very moment, I wish I didn't know what all this means. Will I be ready to take care of him? Or let someone else take care of him when I know what to do? The thoughts kept spiraling through my head as...
- Dr. Evans, we need you!" Dr. Grant Browns said as he took me back to the real world.
