A/N more songs that are for Canon Dawn! Pride and Fear by TheFatRat
The teacher finally came in and began to speak. Unfortunately, all Dawn could hear was her own heartbeat. She hadn't been this close to Nightmare since she figured out her feelings, and boy was it going quite the number on her. He was nonchalantly leaning back, looking bored.
Geez, the bad boy type should really be a warning to run away. But boy, it was oh so enticing now that she thought about it. No, she had to focus! She glanced over at Nightmare, only to realize he was staring directly at her with his piercing teal eye. She nearly squeaked in surprise and quickly whipped around. She needed to do something that he would think was normal.
Right, she could take notes! She realized in her embarrassment she hadn't gotten her stationary out. She cursed her luck and quickly set it up. Opening to a new page, she quickly scribbled words down.
Problem here being that she hadn't been paying attention to what the teacher was saying, so she just had to hope that he would avoid her notes. Especially when she realized that she had been doodling his name with little hearts. No Dawn, anything but that. She quickly switched it up to absentminded doodling, a big habit of hers. When she looked down however, she noticed she had started to really roughly sketch Nightmare.
Panicking, she slammed her notebook shut and tried to think of a way out of this. Maybe pass a note? What would she even write this time. Instead of normal banter, her head just decided to spout pickup lines at her. She groaned. Having a crush on someone was seriously a lot more work than she thought. She really had more respect for some of her friends now. Especially Cross; if he was so at peace with his feelings how was it even possible to resist the urge to do something about it and get it over with? He had a lot more self control than she could ever wish to have.
While she racked her brain, Nightmare shamelessly stared on. He hated acting like a love struck puppy, but he couldn't help it. Dawn was the cutest girl he thought he'd ever met. Especially when she was being a forgetful mess. He didn't know what caused her to act like she had been since class started this morning, but man was it absolutely adorable! Was this what love felt like? If Dream started acting like this he'd have to keep an eye out. Nobody messed with his brother.
Nightmare narrowed his eye. What if she was acting this way because she was in love? He quickly scanned the room to determine who she could be interested in. He was not willing to let someone else have her affections, and if it meant mildly threatening them to stay away then he would do it. Actually, he would throw hands personally with even the lowliest of humans for her. He tried to follow her gaze, but she was just taking notes.
Maybe he had been wrong; she'd been pretty flustered since she first met up with him this morning. She was probably just having an off day. Yeah, that made sense. Everyone had a bad day every so often, so to have her thrown off her rhythm was probably just life trying to challenge her. It was nothing, and he would treat it as such. Yeah, that made sense.
He scoffed and crossed his arms, tipping the seat backwards a bit. If someone else did try to steal her heart he'd just have to fight them for it. Everyone knew that Nightmare didn't lose fights. The real question was would he have the spine to actually tell her?
As an idea it was super easy. But he couldn't even look at her without getting captivated, so he didn't think that was a good idea. He'd probably just creep her out by staring. It couldn't be somewhere everyone could see, because he could not be dropping his guard only to fail. That was not allowed to happen, nor would it.
What would be a nice place to do something like that? They weren't ever really on their own, so it would have to be special circumstances. He wasn't sure he was ready to tell her, but training this afternoon would at least be a good chance to get an idea of the situation. He might even ask people if he didn't know how relentlessly teasing everyone would be about it.
He sighed, still vacantly staring at her. (She was practically sweating bullets and blushing enough to put a firefly to shame, but he couldn't see that.) Why did life have to throw curveballs?
Also, how come she wasn't looking over? He was sure she'd turn to glare or tell him to keep his eye to himself. She hadn't however, and he wasn't sure if she just didn't notice him. He leaned forwards into the desk and stared at her. She fumbled her pen and nearly dropped it. Nightmare swiftly used one of his tentacles to catch it and hand it to her. She looked over, eyes wide, and quickly looked away as she took it from him.
"Thanks Sushi."
She muttered it really quietly, but it was a relief to know that she was still treating him the same. Still, she was really quiet and when he saw her face it was really flushed. That caused his heart to flutter.
She really was gorgeous. He hated himself for realizing it, but he also hated himself for not realizing it sooner. He wondered if he could ever be the reason her face flushed into a dual toned sunrise. (Little did he know it was his fault)
Maybe she had a fever. It would explain why she was so off today. He tried to think if there was anything he could do. He then remembered he had a bottle of tea stowed away in his bag. He pulled it out and silently offered it to here.
"Here, in case this helps. You don't look like you feel so good, and for you that's saying something."
Seriously? Did he have to insult her? Real smooth Nightmare. Reallll smooth. Regardless, she slowly reached out and took it. Nightmare almost sighed in relief; but he didn't because he would prefer not to appear weak. She looked like she was in a daze as she slowly opened it and drank it. She paused and shrugged, proceeding to down half the bottle.
"Kind of bitter, but it feels cooler in here now."
She smiled at Nightmare, and oh did he wish he could save this moment in time forever. She was positively radiant, and that was to put it lightly. She stopped and looked down at the bottle and back at him with wide eyes.
"Did I actually drink that?"
Nightmare blinked. That was a weird response. He slowly nodded. Dawn geared up and put a hand over her mouth. Nightmare panicked- did he somehow upset her? He thought she said it wasn't that bad. She turned to face him and he flinched, just in case she had an insult lined up.
Instead, she pulled him into a tight hug. Nightmare was pretty sure he would short circuit. He had NOT been expecting for this to happen. It was nice, but he was so confused. Dawn sobbed quietly into his shoulder.
"Thank you."
