Violet's POV:

Heaviness was trying to keep me under. Some unseen force but at the same time I felt safe.

"Violet?" I heard a man say. Miles? My eyes refused to open. I was trapped inside my own body.

"Violet?" I heard again. It was Miles. I felt his gentle touch brush hair off my face. I groaned as a wave of pain hit me. Did I get hit by a dump truck?

"What happened?" I managed to croak out. But I was still a prisoner to my own eyes that refused to open.

"I was going to ask you the same thing. But just rest for now. You're safe," Miles coaxed me. His fingertips drew circles on my head, soothing me.

His peaceful presence almost made me forget the turn of events. I needed to know if Hannah was okay. What did Nicholas do to her? "Hannah," was the only word my body could create.

"Rest," Miles reassured me, and my body obeyed.

I had no idea how much time had passed when I woke but all the lights were off in whatever room I was in. What I could see in the darkness was that I was in a king-size bed, which was incredibly soft. With matching black furniture all around with a lot of space. I was in unfamiliar territory.

I pushed myself up, my body still felt rough but better. Then it hit me, I needed to pee. I slowly stood up and began searching around for a door that hopefully led to the bathroom.

Something silver shimmered in my vision and I was hopeful it was a doorknob. Right as I went to grab it, it opened and my hand accidentally grazed someone's lower region. I felt heat quickly rise through my entire body in embarrassment.

I heard a growl before I was pulled in tightly for a hug, thankfully it was Miles. His nose was pressed into my hair and neck. "Miles?" I said quietly but he kept on. "Miles, I have to pee."

"Oh!" He released me.

I quickly did my business but noticed in the bright light of the bathroom just how horrific I looked. I looked like a hollowed version of myself. A hollowed-out shell of what I once was with dark circles that felt permanent at this point. I had been constantly living on edge for the majority of my life. Miles made me feel safe but this was only a bandaid. He would get tired of me and leave, just as everyone else has.

"You okay?" I heard Miles ask through the door.

I flung the door open and he was right there, his ear having just been against the door. I brushed my hair back. "Yeah, sorry."

He played with my hair, sending joyful tingles along my body. "Good," he purred.

I was afraid to look up at him. Normally, I would have looked directly into the faces of those who viewed themselves as higher than me but this man right before me sparked the nerves to bubble within me. One, he made me feel things I never thought possible. Two, he made me afraid but not in the typical sense of fear. Fear that when he does get tired of me, it will break me. Three, I had feelings for him.

But he had answers that I did not have the answers to, which only intimidated me that much more. "May I ask what happened? I... I just remember being in a care ride and seeing Hannah."

He raised an eyebrow, his eyes trying to decipher which of mine to look into. "I could ask you the same thing. Do you not know?"

I shook my head. What was he getting at? "I just remember a vampire ripped me out of the car and then I ended up here."

His gaze deepened. "You killed the vampire with your own bare hands."

My jaw dropped. "I... No. I'm not strong enough."

"What are you?" Miles asked, stepping closer to me.

Human. I have only ever been human. Unless did Nicholas do something to me? "As far as I am aware, I am human. But... could Nicholas have done something to me?"

One more step forward and I now had to crane my neck to look up at him. "You're no vampire, if that's what you're wondering. But what you did do was turn a vampire into a human."

What? "That... that's not possible," I said. If I could do that, then that would mean I could put an end to Nicholas.

"Believe me, I know it's not possible. But your friend Hannah was turned to bring you back to Nicholas. But you turned her back to human. Don't worry, she's in a safe house."

"Why does Nicholas want me back?" I asked, I was free. Well, I broke my end of the bargain. I was here with Miles, drawn to him for some reason.

"I thought it was to hurt me at first but now I'm wondering if he's known all along that you're something more," Miles said, pulling me in for a hug. My face rested perfectly against his chest.

So I'm something unknown, but what was Miles? "What are you?" I asked, he had to be something to not be feared by Nicholas. I looked up to see his reaction.

His eyebrow raised, his lip twitched. "You haven't figured it out?"

I could not keep his gaze, I had to look away. Whatever Miles was doing to me, this attraction I felt towards him and his lack of fear of Nicholas. It intimidated me. "I know you have money. Are you some member of the mafia?"

Laughter echoed within the room. I looked up at him questioningly but then his eyes turned black. Before I could ask any more questions, his lips were on mine. His lips danced with hunger on mine. His hands pulled me in close and I never wanted him to let go. Whatever he was, it did not matter. I wanted him more than the oxygen I needed to breathe.

"What are you?" I breathed between kisses.

"In due time," he commented as he continued ravishing my lips. I had never wanted something more.
