Violet's POV:
Miles had been gone for most of the day, leaving me alone to explore. I had learned Miles deemed his house safer. And a part of me felt safer here too. But then again, anything was better than being in the confines of Nicholas.
I shuddered at the memory of him gorging himself on each of us. Every time he'd compel us to forget, but I never did.
His room was expansive, a typical king-size bed. But no pictures decorated the room. On my adventure, I had found other bedrooms, a library, a media room, and a workout room. I traveled downstairs to find a parlor, living area, a dining room with a table that could feast at least 50 people. And finally the kitchen. My stomach growled.
I opened the fridge, jumping at the sound of another woman, "Oh!"
I slammed the fridge shut. The woman was about my height, carrying a load of laundry. So he had a maid.
"So sorry deary, you startled me. He told me he had a guest staying here. I just..." she tilted her head. "he never mentioned it was a lady. Can I get you anything to eat?"
I shook my head, "I can get it."
She had a heartwarming smile, "I do not mind. What would you like? Chicken, lasagna, french toast? Anything and I can make it."
I couldn't say no to her. "Um, just some scrambled eggs is fine." I knew it was well into the afternoon, but I had yet to eat breakfast.
"Yes, yes! You just sit and I'll get it for you." She left to go take the laundry to another room before coming back and putting on a cute blush pink apron. "Oh I'm so sorry dear, I forgot my manners. My name is Susan, what's your name?"
My name was the one thing I always had control over. Miles knew my name, he must trust this lady if she were in his house and working for him.
She noticed my reserve, "It's okay dear, you don't have to tell me." Her smile seemed genuine as she got to work cracking the eggs and whisking them together with salt and pepper.
"Thank you," my voice was quiet.
I looked around while she continued whipping up some scrambled eggs, and I could not help but wonder why such a large place was so empty. Where was everyone?
As if on cue, I heard the front door open and close. "Mmm, smells good. What're you cooking Susan?" Miles said, entering the room. I could not help but realize I had been tense and the moment he was near, I felt at ease.
He planted a gentle kiss on my forehead. "Sorry for being gone as long as I did. I had some business matters to attend to." I knew he was in charge of a business but something seemed off, like he was not telling me the whole picture.
"Scrambled eggs, would you like anything Sir?" Susan asked.
"Double it and steak. You know how I like it," Miles said as he sat on the stool next to me.
"Is everything alright?" I questioned. He seemed stressed.
He nodded, not looking at me. "It will be."
Glass shattered; Miles, was in front of me before I could fully register what was happening. Susan herself was flanking his side. And before us was Eric, holding Jenny by the neck. She had bite marks painted all over her frail body. What was Nicholas doing to them?
"You got a lot of nerve coming here?" Miles growled.
"And you have a lot of nerve tattling on things you don't know the whole story of," Eric spat back.
"Let Jenny go," I said, bringing everyone's attention to me. Miles tried to shove me further behind him but I pushed back slightly. I was not going to budge.
"I will, in exchange for you," Eric answered.
Miles growled again, his body seemed as if its skin were rippling in waves. I was drawn to touch his back and he stilled. "You will never have Violet, she's free."
"Then say goodbye to Jenny," Eric said, biting into her. At the same time, Miles's body shook, bones breaking as a massive wolf replaced him. And I faded into the black.
