I choked on my sandwich.
"Okay," I coughed, "back up. Rewind. WHAT?!"
"You're a demigod," Kayla explained patiently, for the millionth time. "One of your parents was a god, the other, mortal. You're most likely a Greek demigod, as Roman demigods get taken to Camp Jupiter when they're kids. I'm a demigod too- my dad's Apollo."
"BUT I THOUGHT THOSE WERE MYTHS-"
"Well, all myths are based on fact."
I stared at the pennies glinting under the fountain's surface, contemplating my entire life.
"This- this isn't a prank, is it?"
Kayla shook her head, "Nope."
The strangest thing was— I believed her. However, that didn't mean I'd have to accept it, no matter how much it made sense.
I shook my head, stuffing the rest of the sandwich whole into my mouth. "Okay, that's it, I'm gonna go home, and take a nap, maybe I'll wake up and realize this was all a dream."
"Y/N, wait-"
I got up off the fountain wall, only to topple backward and go crashing into the water, the resulting splash drenching poor Kayla from head to toe.
Kayla sprung up, "Oh my gods, are you okay?" She reached her hand out to help me up.
I took her hand and hoisted myself up, settling back down on the fountain wall before making eye contact with the younger girl, smiling a little. "It's okay, you can laugh."
And that was it. It was as if a dam broke as the two of us doubled over, laughing ourselves silly.
"O-oh my gods," Kayla giggled, wiping her streaming eyes. "I haven't laughed this hard since forever."
"I know right? Gosh, we're soaked-"
Kayla shrugged. "Eh, it'll be fine, we can go to camp and dry off-"
"Camp?"
Kayla facepalmed. "Oh right, I forgot to tell you about Camp. Camp Half-Blood, it's a safe place for demigods like us to train to fight against monsters in the real world."
"Cool. I'm in."
She blinked. "That's it? No convincing?"
I shrugged. "Hey, my life's boring."
"Okay, fair. So, if you're coming along, I need to contact camp," Kayla spoke, fishing around for something in her quiver.
"Are you looking for your phone?"
"Oh, no, demigods can't use phones, monsters can sense us with those- ah, here it is," Kayla pulled out a fat gold coin from her quiver.
"Now that you say it... I have noticed more monster attacks whenever I use my phone...." I looked down at my phone, considering it for a second, before pulling out the memory card, SIM card, and battery and chucking the device into the fountain. "Now, what's up with the coin?"
Kayla gaped at me. "Did you just- never mind. This coin is to contact camp."
"Is it like those DA coins that Hermione makes in Order of the Phoenix?"
Kayla snickered. "Nah, I wish. This is a drachma, the currency of the Greek Gods. We just need a rainbow- ah, there's one," She threw the gold drachma into the mist from the fountain. "Oh Iris, Goddess of the Rainbow, accept my offering. Show me Chiron at Camp Half-blood."
"Chiron? Like the centaur?"
Kayla nodded. "Immortal trainer of heroes."
Wow...
The rainbow shimmered, as the image of a middle-aged man with curly brown hair and beard appeared. "Kayla, hello- and ah, who's this?"
I waved awkwardly. That must be Chiron... he looks like a history professor.
Kayla spoke up, "Chiron, we need transport to camp. This is Y/N, a new demigod."
