Madelyn
I watch from the trees as pápa scales down the wall. He says he's trying to rescue someone but he's being kinda creepy. He's been like this since máma disappeared. He thinks I don't know what's going on, but I do. He doesn't realize how much I really know. I would tell you the truth, but that would spoil the story, wouldn't it?
I smile as he walks toward us (the bugs and I) he looks angry. Probably for the same reason as the shadow lady. She's very angry. I glance over at her, standing amongst the trees. It's like she doesn't want me to be alone.
Pápa walks over, not noticing her. "Hi, papá! I found a worm!" I hold a cute, wriggling worm in front of his face. He hates worms. They make him look green. He pretended to like Them though, since I love them so much. He smiles at me, "I see, lucky. When we get back to the hotel, you can put it in their garden. It'll help the flowers grow."
I grin at him, "Then the flowers will be super pretty, and more bugs will come!" I giggle, pretending like I don't know that he just wants me to get rid of them. As we begin walking back toward civilization, I look at him, "Why do you like the flowers so much?" He tilts his head, mirroring me, "Because every flower has meaning, and each flower is unique. I think that concept is even more beautiful than the flower itself."
I snicker, "That's mushy gushy, papá!" I stick my tongue out. He's so dorky. He flicks it, "If ya keep sticking it out, you're gonna bite it off!" I giggle more.
I started telling him about all the bugs and stuff I saw. He smiles but I know he's not paying much attention. "A bunch of butterflies flew in circles around me, like a butterfly tornado. I think the shadow lady did it." He nods along, not questioning who 'the shadow lady' is. That proves that he isn't listening.
I keep going, telling him about the bee that landed in my hair. Come to think of it, I don't think it ever flew away. Oh no... I hear him shriek as the be finally escapes my tangled mess of hair.
The bee flies away and he slowly calms down, continuing our walk. I poke his arm repeatedly. "Pápa?" He looks down at me, "Yes, clover?" I smile at the nickname. He's been calling me that for forever.
"Can you tell me a story?" He tilts his head as if he doesn't know what I'm talking about, just like always. "What kind of story?" I smile at him the same way I always do, "I wanna hear a ghost story!" He smiles back at me with his 'dad smile.'
He ruffles my hair, smiling softly. I know exactly what he's gonna say. "I don't think I know any good scary stories~" He whines and pouts, being even more goofy than usual. "Hmmm...", he rubs his chin as if he's thinking really hard.
I giggle as he widens his eyes, acting as if he suddenly had an epiphany, "I know the perfect story!" Here we go.
