Lumi and Lucky left Mrs. Emberwood's general store when the sun was just starting to creep behind the tall trees surrounding the outer rim of Edgerest. The gallop of horse hooves and the rumble of carriages filled the air, a testament to the town's lively energy. They walked side-by-side down the cobblestone street, taking in the sights and sounds of the bustling town around them as the day slowly came to an end. They had tried to gather everything they'd need for a trip to Mirstone; mostly food since Jester and Lenix had bottomless pits for stomachs, and the two had eaten most of Lucky's breakfast buffet earlier that day.

Edgerest had changed since their childhood. It seemed bigger now, with more shops and stalls than Lumi ever remembered seeing before. New buildings had sprung up in the outskirts, catering to travelers and adventurers seeking supplies for their next great journey. Even the old fountain, which had been the centerpiece of the town for as long as either Lumi or Lucky could remember, had been restored to its former glory, its intricate stonework gleaming in the afternoon sun.

While Edgerest had flourished over the years, Lumi and Lucky seemed to be the only two that didn't change with it. They were the same as they'd always been; Lucky with her bright smile and naturally giving nature, and Lumi with her reserved disposition and unwavering love of nature. The two girls had grown up in Edgerest and knew the town like the back of their hands. However, after the events that had transpired earlier in the day, Lumi had come to realize that even though they'd stayed the same, everything else around them had changed without them.

Lumi glanced over at Lucky. Her friend seemed distant, lost in her own thoughts as they walked down the streets. She looked back ahead and chewed on her lower lip as her mind began to wander, going back to the conversation she'd had earlier with Jester and Lenix. A thousand thoughts plagued her mind.

What if the Demon Queen really was planning a full scale attack on Elven towns? Were Demons truly that powerful? Could Lucky and I stop something like that if it did occur?

That was when Lumi was reminded of the fact that she was still powerless, unlike Lucky and every other Elf she had ever met. She couldn't manipulate nature like her mother could, nor could she heal wounds or ignite fire in the palm of her hand, or summon waves of water with a few wiggles of her fingers. Being born without the magic gene was something her mother always told her that she'd get used to, but it was something she knew she couldn't just get over.

Lucky suddenly halted to a stop, jerking Lumi out of her depressive thoughts. Lumi glanced over at Lucky to see her gazing intently at a flyer stuck onto one of the town notice boards. She stepped closer, peering over Lucky's shoulder to see what had caught her interest. Upon further inspection, Lumi saw that the flyer was a one displaying the annual Edgerest town festival, a festive gathering held each year to celebrate the bounty of the season.

"Lucky, we need to keep going," Lumi said, placing a hand on her friend's shoulder. "Come on. Jester and Lenix are waiting for us at home. Who knows what trouble they've caused while we've been gone."
