When Tiffin returned from her outing, the five of them got ready to leave. As they loaded their bags of clothes, supplies, and food into the carriage, they could feel the tension in the air.
The sun was setting, and the sky was beginning to turn a dark shade of red. Most of the merchants and shopkeeps had already closed their shops, and only a few villagers were still roaming about the streets. Edgerest was usually a lively town, but now it seemed quiet and deserted, since no one wanted to be out at night.
Lucky closed the door of her house one last time, a sad smile gracing her lips as she locked the door. "I'll be back soon," she said, to no one in particular. Turning away from her home, she joined the others at the carriage.
Tiffin was busy tightly strapping Icarus to the carriage, pulling on the straps and checking to make sure they were secure. Icarus whinnied, pawing the ground with his hoof as he tugged on his reins. The straps and buckles hugged against his wide chest, making Tiffin glad she decided to get ones that were the right size for his tall stature. His flat muscles and slender frame had allowed her to fasten them to his torso without too much of an issue.
As Tiffin checked Icarus, Lumi helped Jester and Lenix load the burlap bags of food and snacks into the back of the carriage. They had packed everything they thought they might need for the journey: water, dried fruit, jerky, nuts, bread, cheese, and other assorted items. Lumi had also managed to find a few jugs of fresh milk and several bottles of wine in Lucky's pantry, which would be useful for getting everyone through the trip. The win was more for her than anyone else, but she didn't need to tell anyone that.
"Alright, Icarus," Tiffin said, patting the horse's muscular shoulder. "Time to go. Everyone, let's get in the carriage."
"Who's going to steer it?" Lumi asked, looking around at everyone.
"Icarus is my horse, so I'll be in charge of steering it." Tiffin replied, hopping into the seat at the front of the carriage. "You can all ride in the back with the bags. Make sure you're strapped in securely."
"How far away is Mirstone?" Jester asked as she scrambled into the carriage.
"About two days, possibly more, depending on whether or not we run into any trouble," Tiffin replied, grabbing the reins in her hands.
"What kind of trouble?" Lumi asked, her tone sounding nervous. The meer thought of danger made bumps sprout from her skin and shivers race up her spin.
"We'll be traveling through some pretty rough terrain, and there's always the possibility of bandits or other unsavory types. That's why we need to stay alert. Jester, Lenix, I need you two to remain out of sight as best you can. Stay low, don't keep close to the windows, and make sure you stay in the carriage at all times."
"I still don't like the idea of sleeping in the woods," Lumi grumbled as she climbed into the carriage.
"Just think of it as camping," Jester said, a wide smile spreading across her face. "It'll be fun!"
