When Tiffin returned to the carriage, they set off again along the dirt path, leaving Mirstone and the Ookami camp behind them. As the village disappeared into the distance, Damien sighed in relief. He felt a weight lift from his shoulders as the town and the camp fell out of view. He was free. Free from Boris's constant criticism and judgment. Free from having to hunt innocent animals for food. Free from always being second-guessed and doubted and treated like a runt.
He looked over at Lumi, who was sitting next to him, and gave her a grateful smile. He had never had any real friends before; the other Ookami always walked on eggshells around him, afraid to make him feel bad or offend him in some way. He was so tired of being treated like glass, like he would break at the slightest hint of anything negative. He was a grown man, after all, not a child. Sure, he was timid and shy, but he wasn't fragile. At least...he didn't think he was.
The carriage bounced along the uneven road, jostling its passengers. Jester, as unable to sit still as she was, was trying to entertain herself by counting the clouds overhead. Lenix was resting his head against the carriage, eyes closed as he dozed. Tiffin, as ever, was alert and on edge, eyes scanning their surroundings warily for threats. Icarus was a cautious horse, so if any danger was to come near them, Tiffin knew that Icarus would know how to react. Still, they were venturing into areas that Tiffin had barely traveled through, so she couldn't be too careful.
Lucky gazed out the window, watching the trees blur past. "Well, we certainly are getting closer and closer to our goal, aren't we?"
Jester nodded with a grin. "Yeah. I can't wait to see the Elven Kingdom."
Lumi smiled. "Me too."
Sarviline glanced at the map Lumi had passed around, her brow furrowing slightly. "We'll be in Norwich within the hour." She sighed, leaning back in her seat. "It's a dangerous place. Constantly overrun by Nightbeasts. We should try to hurry through that town, no pit stops or anything."
"I don't know, I'm kinda hungry. How about we stop for a quick bite to eat?" Lenix asked, raising an eyebrow.
"No." Tiffin replied, her tone leaving no room for argument. "We need to make good time. Queenstown is still a great deal of miles away."
Lenix pouted, crossing his arms over his chest. "Fine. But I'm getting really sick of eating whatever junk we packed from the house."
"Hey, I packed everything you guys said you wanted!" Lumi said defensively. "I mean, if you wanna make your own meals, be my guest. I wish you luck with that."
"I wanna cook!" Jester said, clapping her hands together.
"No, you don't." Lumi replied quickly.
"Ah, bummer." Jester pouted.
"I know you're all cramped. We'll stop for a stretch and a bathroom break soon, but for now we need to make up for lost time. Okay?" Tiffin looked at everyone in the carriage, waiting for them to nod in agreement.
