Casey had heard everything that he needed to know. Kai was the son of Shredder. He was a mutant. He used Casey to get closer to the turtles to kill them. Anything that Kai had said after that had fallen on deaf ears as Casey was filled with a blind rage and sadness.

Kai didn't love him.

Kai was only using him.

Casey didn't even know what to feel anymore. He stood over Kai's defenseless form, shaking for reasons unknown. All he could focus on was the swarm of emotions surfacing under Kai's eyes. Why did he look so scared?

The air was stiff with tension, the silence growing thick around the six. The only noise was April's footsteps slowly approaching. She came up behind Donatello and placed a light hand on his shoulder. "Guys?" she said. "Maybe we should leave them alone for a minute. They probably want so privacy to... talk some things over."

The brothers tensed up, as if wanting to argue, but slightly relaxed upon seeing the determination on April's face. Donnie stood up from the office chair and put the documents and clipboard back on his desk. Mikey picked up the colorful blob, who's name Kai later learned was Ice Cream Kitty, from where they were playing cards on the ground. April made sure that all the turtles were out of the lab before closing the door behind her as she left the two boys alone.

The lab was racked with an awkward stillness as neither wanted to be the first to speak. Casey was afraid that if he spoke, he would say something to hurt Kai. No matter how angry he was, Casey still liked Kai (he wasn't so sure that the love part was even real anymore though) and he still cared about him.

Kai was afraid that if he said anything, Casey would yell and hit him. He broke Casey's trust and understood that he was more than likely furious.

But someone had to say something first.

Kai tried to look anywhere but at Casey. Casey was sitting on the desk and reading the documents from Baxter Stockman's lab. He seemed mildly interested by it. He cast glanced towards Kai, who was unfortunately still tied to the chair.

Kai focused on the posters on the wall in front of him. There was one that showed the anatomy of a turtle and another of a rat. That could be useful for knowing where to hit in their next fights to...

What? No, he was trying to convince himself that he had changed, but he continued to think of ways to hurt the turtles. Was it all just in his head?

Kai was shaken out of his thoughts by the sound of papers slapping against the table. Kai turned his head to face where the sound had come from but realized that it was only Casey. He was still sitting on the table, but now he was looking directly at Kai.

"So," he said with a knowingly serious face. "The son of the infamous Shred-head."

Kai stared blankly at his friend. "I mean, yeah? It wasn't really my decision though."

"But ya did decide ta help 'im," Casey argued. "Ya were gonna kill the turtles."

"Because that was my job!" Kai shouted, his wrists flexing against the rope that tightly bound them to the chair. The sudden outburst startled Casey silence. Kai bit back tears of frustration. "What did you expect me to do? Not follow his instruction? I would've been killed!"

"But he's yer dad," Casey said. "He wouldn't kill ya."

"that's what your friends thought too," Kai responded. He looked down into his lap dejectedly. "Look. I didn't... want to hurt you, but you were the only way for me to complete my mission."

"You used me!" Casey exclaimed. He hopped down from the table and marched up towards Kai. "You said... you said you loved me."

Kai's heart broke with how much raw emotion was creeping into his friend's voice. He didn't like to see Casey like this. And because of him. He didn't want to be the cause of Casey's anguish.

"And- and I do!" Kai stuttered. "I meant what I said. Everything between us! That was all real to me. We were real!"

Casey shook his head, causing his hair to fall into his face, and crossed his arms over his chest. He smiled a humorless smile, the gap in his teeth still looking as cute as the day Kai met him. "I don' know abou' that," he said. "You lied. Ya could've lied abou' lovin' me too. Sorry, Kai. I don' trust ya anymore."

With only one sentence, Kai felt his heart shatter into pieces, creating a blackened hole where the muscle used to sit. He felt the world around him darken, the bright colors of the scientific posters now robbed and void of all joy. Casey seemed to become a blurred shadow in front of him.

Tears brimmed over the edge of Kai's eyes, spilling down his cheeks and making the short trek down to his chin to drip down onto his thighs.

"W-what?"

"I'm sorry, Kai," Casey said. He turned to the lab door. "We're done."

sorry this one is so short. I wanted to leave off on a dramatic note and this was the best way I could think of.
