TW: hospital, gore, blood

Raph was trying to get the soldier to retreat, but to no avail. Although he was a bleeding mess, the human would not quit. Weapons were long ago disposed of, sliding to the far corners of darkness. They were fighting hand-to-hand and Raph was winning. The soldier was obviously tired from the amount of blood loss and overall less muscle than the turtle.

But never once did the soldier use his ability of coercion.

Raph threw a punch at the soldier's face, knuckles brushing against the sharp side of his metal mask. The soldier staggered back and tripped over his own feet onto the ground. The human struggled to stand up; he was honestly thinking about letting the turtle kill him right then and there. He never wanted to go back to his home to his father, never wanted to go to school, never wanted... never wanted to see Casey again after what he did to him. They were supposed to be friends. He never wanted to get this close to the boy because of this reason.

He used to be the strongest, least emotional villain in all of Shredder's ranks. Now, he was thinking of running away because of his stupid fucking emotions. Why was he feeling this? He wasn't supposed to be feeling things, especially for a boy.

His vision cleared enough to see the charging red turtle. He ducked out of the way with a startled yelp, watching as the turtle ran into the wall. Raph turned around angrily. "Just stay down!" the turtle shouted.

"In your dreams, mutant," Kai said.

Raph reached down to the ground and picked up a piece of shiny metal off of the ground. That was when Kai realized his grave mistake. He led the turtle right to where his discarded weapons had flown and now it was in his three-fingered hand.

A bolt of pain shot through Kai's body as the sai plunged into his side, cutting through his veins and flesh. He looked down in shock at the blood spurting from the wound like a fountain. The dark red liquid splashed onto the concrete, decorating their feet. The two stared at the flow and then at each others' faces. Kai's face was empty of emotion except for shock. He didn't expect being stabbed to not hurt. He didn't feel anything, actually.

The red turtle's eyes widened in horror. What had he done?

Kai stumbled back again, this time staying on the ground, unmoving. His breathing was raspy as he leaned against the rough surface of the brick wall. He clutched his side, the weapon still lodged between his ribs. Raph stood there for a moment, realizing what he had done.

His anger had a habit of getting the best of him, causing Raph to do this that he regretted later. But it never went to this extent. Sure, they had killed people in the past, it was their job: keeping the streets clean of the scum that belonged to the Shredder. But this... this was in cold blood.

But what else could he do? He looked out to the streets outside the alleyway and, without a second thought, grabbed his T-phone. He dialed 911 on the cracked screen and called about a mysterious attack on a civilian. He didn't know if the hospital would treat Shadowman, as he didn't have any record of even being alive. Still, it was worth a shot.

He looked away from Shadowman's bleeding body and to his brothers. Leo and Mikey didn't look so good. They were both covered in bruises and cuts. Scars would litter their arms after tonight. He hauled each of them over his shoulders and flipped up the manhole cover with his foot. Raph looked back to the semi-conscious form of Shadowman. He heard the sounds of an approaching ambulance.

It was all his fault, but he was trying to make it right. Would it work?

(dun dun dun)

Kai woke up in a blindingly white room. He blinked his eyes, groaning at the shrill ringing in his ears. He saw the blurry faces of doctors and nurses hovering above him. Lights were shining into his face, making it even harder to see. He closed his eyes again and slowly blinked. Where was he? All he remembered was the fight in the alleyway with the turtles... being stabbed. He must be in the hospital. But how did he get there?

A doctor shone an ophthalmoscope into his eyes. He groaned and tried to look away. The ringing was slowly dying down in his ears, being replaced with the sounds of muffled speaking.

"Excuse me! Sir!" a nurse spoke. "Can you tell me what happened to you? What year is it? Can you tell me your name?"

Kai didn't know why the nurse wanted to know what year it was. It was 2012, what other year would it be?

"It's 2012, lady," he slurred. "It's been that way for eight months."

The nurse wrote something down on her clipboard, the pen scritching and annoying Kai's ears again. He looked around the room. He wasn't in the Operating Room like he had previously thought, but rather the Intensive Care Unit. It must have been a little bit since he had arrived. The ICU was mainly used for monitoring patients after they had already been operated on.

How was he ever going to pay for this?

He tried to sit up, but felt a few pairs of hands push him back down into the soft sheets of the hospital bed.

"I'm going to give you a shot, okay?" the same nurse asked. Kai felt a small prick in his arm as the needle slid under his skin and into his vein. "You're going to feel a little sleepy. But it's going to be okay. You're just going to fall asleep for a little bit while we monitor you. "

The nurse kept talking but Kai was already asleep. His dreams were weird, dancing colorful beavers with sharp teeth serenaded him for what seemed like hours. They didn't let him leave the cloud kingdom in which they performed.

When Kai woke up again, he felt a lot better mentally. Physically, he was wracked with pain. Weren't the nurses supposed to give you medication to make the pain go away? He wanted to leave the room, but there was always a nurse in his room with him. He wanted to get up and do something; sitting in the bed was getting very annoying and tiring. He started coming up with a plan in his mind to escape, but none of them seemed to work. He didn't know the map of the hospital and-- unlike the movies-- hospitals were a maze. The ICU normally wasn't anywhere close to the entrance of the hospital. He would have to wait until he was either moved or someone came to visit him. The latter was becoming increasingly less likely to happen, as his father probably didn't even care and was too angry to care because he lost the turtles again. Casey didn't even know that Kai was in the hospital because he didn't have his phone.

He was realizing how lonely he really was.

Alone in a hospital room was not how he wanted to die.
