The Pianist

This is based off the song The Pianist by Madame Macabre featuring Myuu. It's an awesome song so I hope you enjoy the story.

I sat in a soundproof room playing the piano watching the door as I played. As if on cue I see it start opening so I instantly stop playing, "What did I say about knocking? There's even a sign on the door." My daughter walks in with her head down. I walk over to her, "What's wrong my dear?" She sniffled, "My friends don't believe you can play the piano. Why don't you play for them?"

With a sigh I sat on the floor, "Remember when I said my quirk can be seen as villainous?" She nodded confused. "It's not a quirk I yield but a curse. You also have the same curse along with your amazing flying quirk. Mine resonates with pianos, organs, and keyboards while yours resonates with tuba, trombone, trumpet, and baritone."

"What is the curse Daddy and why do we have it?" Before I could answer my wife walked in her body hidden in the shadows that follow her like a second skin. "The curse has to do with both my family and his. It's a very long story so you ready or do you want a drink and snack first?" With a flutter of her skirt my daughter flew to the kitchen.

With a chuckle I asked, "I'm guessing we aren't telling it all?" My wife nodded before our daughter flew back in with multiple sodas and popcorn. My wife and I laughed before we headed to the livingroom where we sat down for the story. I did check the room for any ease dropping bugs before I started.

"Centuries ago before electricity was invented there was a guy who fell in love with a girl. She was the most beautiful girl in town but her heart was destined to go to whomever can play music beautiful enough to make her heart cry." My daughter groaned, "Daddy, can you tell it as if it was you?" I chuckled, "As you wish my dear."

~<Centuries ago>~

I groaned in frustration as I pull out some hair. My hands bleeding some from all the playing I've done on my piano and sometimes the church organ. Unfortunately, the girl I desired, Melody of Goldenthorn, had to walk by my house as I looked out the window strengthening my resolve. I have to finish the song. It has to be perfect.

As I ran through my music again time flew by until it was almost midnight when thunder shook the house dimming the candles. When I went to adjust them I saw a creature of shadow was in front of me. She was a shadow female with sharp claws. "Poor mortal, I bet your desires are driving you crazy. You wish to make her yours yet your music is just missing that last tiny bit."

I stood up with fear causing the piano bench I was sitting on to fall over. "Who are you? What's going on right now?" How about I put it simply for you." She suddenly used her claws to play my piano not causing any damage to it. The music was snippets of what I desired to write and play. "Give up your soul mortal man And that pretty little thing will be in your hand.Just sign the dotted line and I'll make you shine. It will last for all time"

As the words dotted line left her lips a contract formed in front of me. I'm not sure what came over me but I couldn't help but bite my finger and sign the contract in blood. Lightning flashed and the next thing I knew I was waking up in my bed the next morning. Instead of believing the deal was real, I thought it was a dream.

After making some breakfast I tried playing the piano and instantly noticed a difference. My music was more fluid and was even pulling my own heart strings. My desires flowed through my hands as if I was a fire hose. I admit not the best example but the closest I can think of. My music filled my house and leaked out letting my neighbors hear it.

A few days later I was forced to play in the towns tavern. After calming myself I played for them all, especially for Melody. As I played I set my deepest wishes free by pouring my heart into every key. Then by the end the crowd went mad and I had my desired one. Unfortunately for us, our happiness did not last for long.

Everyone in town, especially Melody, started to get sick about the same time. The only thing was Melody died a lot sooner and I didn't know why until I realized something. The ones getting sick would get sicker after hearing my music and the few people who missed my show were fine. After I buried most of the town, and returned to the church to lock it up, thunder rolled in the night sky and the shadow was back.

"What did you do? Why did they all die due to my music. Why did you cause that?!?!" My questions only made her laugh before she started to play the church organ. "You stupid things never read. Clearly stated that your music makes their hearts bleed. You signed the dotted line and I made you shine. This shall last for all time." As she laughed lightning flashed and the town was gone.

I never played music again and moved to another town saying I was the only one to survive the lightning strike. Eventually I got a family and realized my kids got my curse with different instruments. I was immune so I taught them all the truth.

~<Present Time>~

"So that explains why those instruments are banned but why is Mommy a shadow?" I chuckled and my wife sighed, "My great, great, great, whatever grandma was the one to curse his bloodline. I hope to eventually break his curse but magic is no longer in my bloodline like it was back then. Now off to bed sweety, you got school in the morning."

We kissed her goodnight and sent her off to bed. Once we were sure she was asleep I chuckled as I remembered what really happened. The town was destroyed and I was nearly killed by the fire caused by the lightning. Instead of dying I decided to join her stalking in the night.

Just like that night the thunder rolled and she stood beside me. Our claws extended ready to hunt. We kissed each other, "This curse is like a disease, and we will work in unison to go plant those seeds. Just sign the dotted line and we'll make you shine. It will last for all time." We faded into the shadows to find our latest target, a hero with earjacks and a failing side career as a rocker. Time for another plague, It is 3020 after all.
