SmackDown tonight goes live from St. Louis, Missouri with two big segments for the show. First is a non-title one on one match as Cora Jade, the young upstart who has captured the WWE Universe's attention goes against the WWE Women's Champion Asuka, and if Jade manages to score a clean pinfall or submission against the champion, she is granted a title shot against the Empress.
Cora was still reeling from the RKO that was delivered by the menacing Viper, but she was at 100% and ready for her match.
As for the other segment, it was the WWE Championship contract signing as Alex and Randy will meet in the ring tonight to put pen to paper and make their match official.
The attention now focuses on the women's match as both Cora and Asuka made their entrances. For Jade, this is a tall steep mountain for her to climb with a chance of a title shot at the peak while also dealing with the most likely interference of Charlotte Flair.
With her signature skateboard, Cora rode down the ramp and got in the ring as she prepares herself for another big match in her young career. Then the champion made her ominous entrance as she taunted Cora with her Kabuki style dance.
(Cora Jade vs. Asuka - non-title one on one)
The two women locked up, Asuka had the strength advantage as she backed Cora to the turnbuckle, forcing the referee to break the hold. Asuka smirked and flicked Cora's forehead to play mind games with the young gun.
Still feeling the effects of the RKO, Cora stumbled, but managed to get back into the fight. She took the fight to the champion by landing combo blows of left and right, trying to get Asuka on the defense. Successfully backing the champion to the turnbuckle, Cora fazed Asuka with a step up enziguri, then got the champion in position for her version of her ally Drew McIntyre's Future Shock, but as she went for the pinfall, Asuka managed to get her shoulder up at the last second.
(Fast forward)
Asuka stalked Cora and looks to lock in the Asuka Lock, but Jade managed to roll through for a quick cover, but Asuka let go to kick out of the pinfall.
Cora then took down Asuka with a DDT; then she climbed to the top turnbuckle and flattened the champion with a diving senton for the clean pinfall win, ensuring Cora that she will have a title shot at Asuka's title.
Post-match, Charlotte came running down and looks to ambush Jade, but the young Superstar managed to duck the Queen's blow and escaped the ring as Cora taunted the multi-time world champion.
Cora: that title will be mine
She said as she did the belt motion. Then Cora watched as Charlotte measured Asuka and takes her down with Natural Selection.
(Fast forward)
It was now time for the contract signing to make the WWE Championship match official. The Viper Randy Orton made his entrance with his signature cold look on his face as he slowly walks down the ramp and got in the ring to pose on the turnbuckles before taking a seat at the table.
Then the current WWE Champion Alex Auditore made his way to the ring while his eyes stared daggers at his former mentor, not even taking his eyes off the Viper. Alex set his title on the table and sat across from the table as authority figure Adam Pearce facilitated the signing.
Adam: alright gentlemen, right in front of you is the contract for a one on one match at our next premium live event Backlash and it's for the WWE Championship. All we need are you two's signatures to make it official.
Randy took the contract and pen and put his signature on the line. Then he took the mic.
Randy: Alex, you will be taught a lesson you will never forget at Backlash; a lesson that I as a teacher can't even tell his student through words, only actions. I created you, and at Backlash I will destroy you and claim my 15th world title
Not fazed by Orton's words, Alex took the contract and the mic.
Alex: Randy... I didn't need all the help from you; I am no wannabe; sure you did taught a lot of things, but I was the one who carved my own path, I didn't need any help to carve my own legacy. You were given the opportunity because of your family; I had to fight my way from the slums of Quiapo to get were I am today. So at Backlash, time to prove that the student will surpass the teacher
The Pharaoh proceeded to sign his signature under his name, making it official.
Randy: Alex, you should know that in my 22 years in this business, I have ended careers; I sent a lot of people to the hospital and if you remembered last week, I RKO'd anyone, no matter if they were man or woman, and I was surprised that Cora Jade managed to win her match, but back to the topic. Let's go down memory lane, do you remember a couple years ago that right in the middle of this ring, I RKO'd your pretty little wife Alexa?
That remark stung Alex real good as he recalled one of 2021's most shocking moments.
Randy: and I heard that you two had a baby girl. Don't worry about her and Alexa, I will make sure that their husband and father will be there after Sunday, when I beat the living hell out of you and end your career, so you can go home and be the father you could be and I will do everything to get that title of you
Alex clenched his fists and stared Orton down.
Alex: first of all, keep my wife and baby out of your damn mouth, you bastard. I am here to provide a living for my family, the same exact thing you're doing. It was hard because I had to be on the road missing every little moment of my baby girl. My wife and my daughter will be watching me kick your ass at Backlash. People who faced you before said that it is like going to hell. Well then mentor, see you in hell you son of a bitch!
Alex then slammed Orton's face on the table before flipping it away and incited a brawl with Randy as the two traded punches. However, Orton poked Alex's eyes with his thumb and takes down the WWE Champion with an RKO in the middle of the ring.
Randy: stupid! Stupid!
The segment and the show ended with Orton standing tall as he grabbed the title and raised it above Alex's fallen body.
